Donald Trump's Syrian War Paradox
Newsweek ^ | 6 Dec 16 | Unknown

The leaflets fell from the sky over Aleppo, offering dire warnings. “If you don’t leave these areas quickly,” they admonished civilians, “you will be annihilated. Save yourselves.… Everyone has left you alone to face your doom.…”

As Syrian government forces continue to steamroll through eastern Aleppo, the rebel opposition’s last stronghold in this war-ravaged city, the leaflets aren’t just a warning for residents; they’re also an indication that President Bashar al-Assad is poised for victory. It was only a year ago that the rebels seemed on the verge of taking Aleppo, once Syria’s bustling commercial capital. But due to a massive Russian bombing campaign, the ophthalmologist turned strongman has held on to power—and reduced the city to rubble.

Collaborating with Putin and Assad has always meant collaborating with Iran, and it's a huge problem for those who don't want to empower Iran.

If Russia can help us with Isis, great. If they get in the way with the Iran deal or Taiwan, they can go pound sand.

Cold War is over, we won.

Syria has been a Russian Client state since the 1950s. There has never been any US Strategic interest to protect in Syria.

Mindless whining about Russia and Syria like this because your political god lost the 2016 Presidential Primary is just childish petulance.

Why is there a paradox? Just pack up and come home. Undeclared war is illegal.

Leaflet should picture Obama walking away from his red line.

Are we supposed to tear up for the 200,000 people of Aleppo and not for the 1.2 MILLION people in Mosul ( that we are bombing)? Who is killing more innocent civilians— ?? any clue? Do we drop leaflets or just bomb away? I’m sick of the maudlin “Aleppo” propaganda and the absolute silence in Mosul whe the carnage is 6 times worse!!
War is hell. You have to kill people and take property. WE killed a million civilians in WWII— SO WHAT? WIN THE DAMNED THING. Assad has the right to drive insurgents out of the sovereign country on Syria. Since the so called Rebels ( Sunni arabs) hide in populated area — YOU HAVE TO KILL THEM THERE!! Here is a suggestion— Get the hell out of that city at all cost.

My personal heuristic: If the Fraud’s for it, I’m against it.

Hasn’t failed yet in eight years of occupied America.

Yes. Good point — no leaflets in Dresden,Tokyo, Nagasaki or Hiroshima? — just toasted enemy civilians.

We use precision munitions and do our best to minimize deaths, Russia carpet bombs hoping to kill innocent and guilty. I get it. You’re indifferent to mass murder and war crimes. Grozny and Allepo are fine with you. And I’m sure when Putin does it in Lithuania you’ll be fine with it too.

McCain, Graham and Rubio are brokenhearted that the jihadis they helped arm are getting slaughtered.

Collaborating with Putin and Assad has always meant collaborating with Iran, and it's a huge problem for those who don't want to empower Iran.

OTOH, would we have had this conundrum if Obama and company hadn't tried to have Assad overthrown?

That is not true. We did drop leaflets on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. It's just that they sounded so outrageous, they were not taken seriously. Destroy a whole city? Unheard of.

Lithuania? Is that breaking news? THEY ARE “DROPPING LEAFLETS”!!! We never drop leaflets!! They are warning people to get the hell out . That seems very humane to me. I miss your point.

You might have a point if there were any intellectual or factual merit to the argument being advanced against Trump.

But, sad for you, there isn’t any intellectual merit to the argument on your side. It has no rational, ideological, or factual base. It requires one to ignore all historic facts about Russia and Syria to create a fantasy bubble world reality.

This is not a serous critic of Syrian policy but merely the continuation of the daily attempt by #Never Trumpers to manufacture the next fraudulent excuses to whine about Trump

It’s an interesting point. Maybe Obama should have stood up for the Socialist family dynasty of the Assads. Once the people of Syria rose up, there was a dilemma. Assad cracked down. ISIS and al Qaeda exploited the vacuum. Now, Putin’s Russia and Iran are going to come out on top. Democracy lose and Putin and Iran win. It’s not exactly what is best, but I understand it’s better than ISIS, which is why Assad made the choice binary between him and them.
