Donald Trump Shuffles the Ideological Deck
The Wall Street Journal ^ | December 5th, 2016 | By Gerald F. Seib

If President Barack Obama sought to usher America into a postracial era, it is increasingly apparent that President-elect Donald Trump is opening the door to the postideological era.

In fact, it’s nearly impossible to identify a clear ideological bent in the incoming president’s early moves. It’s probably a mistake to try, because the definitions of left and right, liberal and conservative, are being scrambled right before our eyes.

Some Trump moves so far track with his populist outsider campaign image. Others are moves a conventional conservative could make. Some on his team would have been comfortable picks by any standard-issue Republican; some could as easily have been made by a Democratic president-elect.

The new norm will not be left/right, but globalist/nationalist.

If that's the new paradigm, I wish I could tell which one will more vigorously advocate for individual freedom.

you hit the hammer on the nail. I will always be wary of liberal policies but at this point I am more worried about whether someone holds a globalist agenda or a globalist agenda. if we allow the globalists to get there way it will bee serf and master eventually.

American nationalism, because it is based on the Constitution, not the UN

As long as Trump adheres to the Constitution, protects American citizens’ God-given rights, and puts American first, I don’t care if he is a “conservative”.

As far as I am concerned the inbred Bush dynasty and their fellow travelers, the GOPe, and the traitorous, so-called Chamber of Commece, have forever tarnished the word “conservative”. Those globalist pukes and the communist Democrats deserve to be hounded into the political wilderness.

Trump has never held political office, is not a “politician,” and the lamestream media has no power over him. He is what the founding fathers envisioned as a “politician,” a common man from the masses going to Washington to serve then go home.

Yes, just like "Davy Crockett goes to Congress."

Globalists are kind of uber-lefties. America be easy to us, but we will be hard on America. Sorry, unsustainable situation, to borrow the greenie language.

Trump is the richest redneck in America. I kid about rednecks a lot, but as a cultural phenomenon he’s a lot closer to that than he is to the city slick of his geographic roots.

Yeah he’s white, and not ashamed of that at all.

FYI, a way around paywall articles is to post a link via a google search. Goes from here to google... they get to cheat and go to the story. Use google. Don’t trust them but hey. You posted a link to google.

Well, Trump was and is pretty liberal or statist on a lot of things. He’s never been in government and I think he’s not totally sure about what to do now.

However, I think he really does have some good advisors and they’re taking him down another path. It is a path of unity in a good way. If he sticks with them, everybody in the US is going to be happy.

The big question is whether we (meaning all conservatives, whether social or political, GOP or Dem) will be able to get behind a program together without fighting with and mentally killing each other over trivia. Self-assassination has got to stop.

Has he made any bad nomination picks so far?

Great distillation of the issue. You have precisely and succinctly defined what the political divisions in this country and around the world are. Good job.

I believe the world's political/ideological pendulum is swinging back towards the nationalism end of the spectrum currently.

Brexit, Trump, Italy are all indicators of that direction. EU is looking more like an epic fail all the time. Trump is elected just in time to prevent the US from slipping over the precipice. More to follow.
