GOP Leader Breaks With Donald Trump On Suggested 35 Percent Tariff (McCarthy)
The Huffington Post ^ | December 5, 2016 | Matt Fuller

WASHINGTON; If President-elect Donald Trump thinks he’s going to impose a 35 percent tariff on companies importing goods, he might want to check with Republicans in Congress.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) suggested Monday that Republicans would not be in favor of imposing the 35 percent tariff on foreign goods that Trump proposed Sunday in a series of tweets.

Trump may not understand how tariffs really work; it would be very difficult for the United States to impose them on specific companies that move jobs to a foreign country; or that Congress, not the president, sets them. But he also might be trying to use trade complexities to end run around Congress.

The president’s administration could declare a given country in violation of certain trade acts, and then impose a retaliatory tariff. It would then be up to the other nation to lodge protest with the appropriate authority.

If Trump wanted to push the issue, he probably could impose a tariff and wait for Congress, the courts or a trade organization to do something about it. And if he truly wants to do it, Republicans could be the ones going after Trump.

“I don’t want to get into some sort of trade war,” McCarthy said, still downplaying the policy differences between Trump and congressional Republicans.

There is some debate about how much power the president has to enact tariffs and “rip up” trade deals. The president could declare the United States in violation of certain trade acts, and then try to impose a tariff based on those old laws, but there would be significant pushback from Congress.

Regardless, the majority leader said Republicans were intent on overhauling the corporate tax code so businesses would stay in the United States. “That’s the best way to solve this problem,” McCarthy said.

CottonBall :" I used to live in McCarthy’s district - he’s a RINO, through and through."

T I K : If the republican politicians exist in a DemoRAT stronghold, they are, in fact, "DemoRAT-Lite".
The same thing is true of any Repubie elsewhere in the nation.
Our Republicans UPSTATE don't even recognize DOWNSTATE Repubie values as being a group from the same political party;
most urban Repubies have to hide their Conservative values in order to get re-elected, or adopt the RINO/ DemoRAT-Lite agenda.
I hope that Trump encourages all these DemoRAT-Lite types to come into the sunshine and adopt the party Conservative agenda.
There is a change a-comming !Only time will tell !

Trumps going to have to work hard to overcome these traitors in his own party. If anybody can do it he can!

Oh, you know what though? I moved to Tennessee, in an extremely conservative area. And we still have RINOs as our congressmen! That was indeed disappointing. I sent a letter to Phil Roe about not voting for Boehner back in as speaker when I first moved here. I got a letter back glorifying how wonderful Boohoo was. Yuck!

And the governor of the state is barely a Republican. He really ought to switch sides. The problem is that on the ticket there’s nobody else to vote for. Our congressmen ran unopposed, with neither Republican or Democrat trying to unseat him.

Thank you for your comments Jim.

We have 45 million people out of work. I want them employed, and as fast as possible.

If 45 million people earn an avearage of $30 per year, that means we’ll have $6.75 to $13.5 billion more economic activity in our nation.

That means we can do all sorts of things like, pay down the debt, bring Medicare and Social Security back to solvency in the short term. It means we can get our military back into shape in short order.

It also means that folks on Welfare will be able to get of their fat asses and find a job.

Thanks for the discussion.

It’s not $0.10 cents, but the point is a valid one. Those making far less wages cannot be competed with.

Trump is nobody’s fool. I think he’s done quite well in life, and I’ll take his decisions over yours.

As for people doing zip and living quite well, I agree.

It’s downright criminal what we give to people.

My wife and I both made about $35k per hear about 20 years ago. We know of this one couple who were both on welfare or some sort of assistance.

Together they were getting more assistance than we earned.

Once our economy is firing on all cylinders, I recommend doing away with 85% of Welfare. I don’t know what figure is totally reasoned, but it would be my guess about 85% of it is not justified.

That is probably close. I have no idea either of the exact % of waste. I talk to young men working in stores like Lowes. They each tell me they cannot find a woman their age as the women are on welfare/section 8 and work part time just enough to keep getting benefits. If they move in or marry the woman loses her handouts. Look up common core and K12 math and you will see the dumbing down of America.

This is disingenuous. We may have 12,000 tariffs on the books but like immigration laws they are ignored. Currently the duties on imports are set so low that they bring in < 1% in revenue, almost nothing. This needs to change.

I've told you this a dozen times but you still promulgate your globalist lies. Why?

I agree. As far as tariffs go, if we really want to go down that road, we could replace the current asinine system of more than 20,000 different tariffs with one general tariff of no more than 10 percent. (1) It greatly simplifies the tariff schedule, and (2) lots of small businesses rely on imported inputs. It would be a shame to lower the taxes on small businesses, only to greatly increase the costs of their inputs.

No barf alert?

Why would we give these progressive/socialist?marxist multiple chances to get FR traffic?

Makes zero sense to me unless these articles from HuffPo are meant to barfed on.

Thank you also. It was a pleasure to have a reasonable discussion with a thoughtful person about a subject I enjoy discussing - often hard to find something like that here on FR.

If interested, I’m developing a website https://sonsofconstitutionalliberty.com/ with the help of another FReeper, that includes these and many more issues which you might find interesting and relevant. Already has some cool stuff on there and I hope to have it finished fairly soon. Check it out, let me know what you think.

A valuable source I plan to include in the “Free Market Economy” section is Milton Friedman’s works and videos. Milton Friedman is a hero of mine. Here’s sample links to a couple of relevant videos:

You are uninformed, or misinformed. Click link below, enter any kind of product, and you will see the federal duty rates. Without payment, you cannot import your goods.

Listen for once. I will use 2010 as an example. Tariff income was $25.2 billion. Total imports in 2010 were $1,912 billion. So the percent of tariff income was 25.2/1912 = .013 or 1.3%. ONE POINT THREE PERCENT. Get it?

My God how many times do I have to do this? Having a tariff on the books means nothing if the duty rate is close to zero percent. Do I have to rub your nose in it like a puppy? Are you mentally impaired perhaps?

You said, “We may have 12,000 tariffs on the books but like immigration laws they are ignored...”

That is false. Anyone who believes that is uninformed, misinformed, or perhaps a common idiot.

My point was never what percent of federal government receipts come from tariffs. That’s your rant. I don’t know or care. But a simplistic understanding of kindergarten Economics tells us that higher prices (the byproduct of tariffs) lead to less demand. By the book, it’s known as the “marginal propensity to consume”. Google it.

Honestly. I’m trying to help you.
