Senate Votes 99-0 to Extend Sanctions Against Iran

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted on Thursday to extend American sanctions against Iran for a decade, sending to President Obama a measure that supporters said would help ensure that the United States could fully respond if Iran were to violate its obligations under the nuclear agreement.

Iranian officials, rankled that the legislation to extend sanctions was being considered — the House overwhelmingly passed it last month — have threatened to respond if the United States goes through with the renewal.

The 99-to-0 vote Thursday showed the desire of lawmakers to maintain a tough posture toward Iran amid uncertainty over the future of the nuclear agreement, which President-elect Donald J. Trump railed against during his campaign.

“Given Iran’s continued pattern of aggression and the country’s persistent efforts to expand its sphere of influence across the region, preserving these sanctions is critical,” the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said on Thursday. He said he expected the Trump administration and the new Congress to “undertake a total review of our overall Iran policy.”

Asked on Wednesday if the president would veto the extension of sanctions, the White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, said that the administration would review it. “The administration continues to retain substantial authorities that can be used to impose financial sanctions on the Iranian regime,” he said.

Mr. Earnest suggested, however, that the president could still sign the legislation. “There are plenty of times where the president has signed into law bills that Congress has passed that we’re not sure are entirely necessary,” he said.

"It took Obama 8 years to screw us good, so it’ll take about 2 years to unscrew us."

That's an optimistic time frame. I believe it will take 8 years of a Trump presidency and Cabinet to reverse all the socialist crap going back to Clinton, and some by W.

Trump has said nothing as yet about doing away with certain agencies or requesting Congress to do away with Cabinet Departments. Want a list of Department and Agencies to either eliminate or reduce? I've posted such many times on this board, but would be happy to do again.

What kind of house did the Iranians buy for Bernie Sanders?

Since Hillary bought Bernie Sanders a $650,000 house, it must be his vacation house that Iran paid for.

Hmmmm???

Bernie Sanders is the Senator that abstained.

Guess he was too busy decorating his new home (thanks, Hillary) for Festivus.

if the president is negotiating a treaty and doesn’t send it to the senate, it is never alive.

in 1861 General Michael Corcoran was in charge of the Fighting 69th Regiment, an all Irish unit from Manhattan. During the ST. Patricks Day parade that year, the Duke of Windsor was a guest and was viewing the parade. the 69th Regiment was directed to dip the American flag to the Duke when it passed the reviewing stand. Gen. Corcoran refused, stating that the American flag will never be subjugated to a foreigner They court-martialed him and he was incarcerated; but la=et our directly after the start of the CW.

not bad for a guy born in Ireland. He was killed in the CW BUT HIS LOVE OF THE FLAG LIVES ON.

Why would they do this, when they voted 98-1 for the Corker Amendment? Everyone but Tom Cotton voted to give 0bama the authority to give >$150 BILLION to Iran.

Ted Cruz, I am calling your @ss out on this wretched decision. Wanker.

Education Department can go. Energy can go. Homeland Security can go. EPA needs to be limited. Consumer Board needs to go or severely limited. What I miss?

Absolutely agree with the Education Department. Why is the Fedgov even involved with that? It should be up to the States and local municipalities. Plus, if eliminated, it would weaken National Education Association (NEA) that only exists for itself and furthers the indoctrination of students.

Energy Department can go or downsized with someone in charge who actually looks out for America's domestic and international interests.

I'm no longer sure about Homeland Security, as I once opposed it. It has done good by making all LE agencies share intel. Prior to DHS, there were too many fiefdoms who didn't share enough intel. Numerous attacks have been averted because of intel sharing. The main responsibility of the Fedgov is to protect its citizens.

I'm also not sure why we need the Department of Agriculture. Could that be consolidate under the Department of the Interior?

I also question the need for the Commerce Department. Exactly what do they do? Maybe a agency that works within State Department, but a Cabinet position?

To repeat, HUD could be absorbed into the Health and Human Services (HHS).

Many agencies could be eliminated or consolidated into different departments.

Forgot one: Why do we have a Marshal Service when the FBI has the same domestic power to investigate, arrest, and transport prisoners on the Federal level? Is that not what US Marshals do? I realize Marshal's have other duties, but they could be absorbed by the FBI or DHS and still fulfill those duties. Am I wrong? Just looking to consolidate and get rid of the countless redundant jobs in the Fedgov.

I've read where Fedgov jobs work force is now larger than our manufacturing work force. Put these pencil-pushers to work in Trump's new factories or they can serve Happy Meals.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) should be eliminated because of their employee's rude, power-mad, fat idiots. The DHS or can hire private security contractors. They know how to get the job right. Think of all the combat Veterans who could do a better job. TSA is another fail of Fedgov.
