What kind of parents would name their child Buzz? Is is it short for Buzzby?

Buzz Aldrin (born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr., January 20, 1930). The nickname "Buzz" originated in childhood: the younger of his two elder sisters mispronounced "brother" as "buzzer", and this was shortened to Buzz. Aldrin made it his legal first name in 1988.

Birth name is Edwin Eugene Aldrin. Clearly Buzz was a very American nickname that stuck and he probably liked it or it grew on him.

who would permit an 89 year old man to travel to Antarctica?

No one, of course. He's a spry 86 year old. :-)

“What idiot would allow an 86 year old man to go to Antarctica?”

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

I am sure it was a nick name acquired from some type of aviation activity and his parents had nothing to do with it.

What is ailing an 82 year old man? What is not ailing him?

FWIW, my older brother is named Michael but when I was a little tot, I couldn’t say Michael and so it came out as “Coco”. It didn’t’ stick to become his nickname and no one else called him that except for my mother sometimes jokingly, but I still sometimes call him that, especially when wishing him a happy birthday. : )

I hope he’s okay. But letting an 86-year-old man go to Antarctica where evacuation is problematic? Not sure of the wisdom of that.

Sixty years ago, our landlord, Adm. Richard Bird, entertained me with stories of the South Pole; I was 10. He made it sound so exciting and full of adventure.
I can see the attraction for Buzz Aldrin.

Good for him. I hope at 86 I can be visiting somewhere like Antarctica.

Sorry to hear that. I knew he was going — I follow him on Twitter and Instagram (when I remember I have Instagram). Better safe than sorry.
