Tuesday on ABCs The View, the panel opened by discussing Donald Trumps recent tweets that threatened to jail or revoke citizenship to people who burned the American flag. While the whole panel agreed that this punishment would be a violation of the First Amendment, co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg went out of her way to defend the action of flag burning in the first place. When co-host Paula Faris stated that people who did this hated our country, Whoopi leaped in to make this brainless defense: [T]hey dont hate the country. Stop saying that! she argued with Faris.

That law was found to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
I’m just traditional enough to maintain that burning our flag is NOT speech. It was not considered speech until a recent Founding hating SCOTUS majority sucked that idea from the same orifice Roe v Wade came from. Check the year and look at the court.
Please not another Roberts!! When he was appointed I thought it was great. What a disappointment he has turned out to be.
I sincerely hope there is another person of Scalia’s caliber out there. I will start praying for that.
See: United States v. Eichman
What year was flag burning deemed speech bt the Supremes?
1989 and 1990.
I didn’t know that, that must have happened when I was otherwise engaged (living life, raising a family). Thanks and sorry to hear that.
Is defacing money still against the law or can I start making jewelry from all my pennies?
She’s probably just talking about the people who live in the seven states whose stars don’t appear on our flag. /s
Every person in every state is covered under those 50 stars. Is she ignorant or what? Rhetorical folks...
After eight years of Obama’s rule, how can she trash this nation for not helping Blacks. Obama did nothing but screw them. If he couldn’t help them, get off this freaking idea that the nation doesn’t care about Blacks. You know damn well she thinks Obama did. And yet, NOTHIN!
Why is it that people from all around the world can come here, apply themselves and be successful in no time at all, yet we have generations of Blacks here who have never amounted to anything.
Look, we have White in that same boat, so it isn’t a racist question. What is it about some people who just click, and others who never do?
Whoopie, figure that one out and help people in the Black communities. Quit blaming the nation, the flag, the Whites the boogie men, and start taking ownership of your own fate.
Blacks need to man up. That doesn’t mean arm yourself and steal whatever you can take by force or by hook or by crook.
Get a job. Apply yourself. Become successful.
Some Blacks do it. Emulate them instead of call them names.
I just looked up Texas v. Johnson. I’m very disappointed in Scalia. Through the years that great man occasionally said some very assinine and unwise things. IMHO, his vote in T v. J was foolish legislating from the bench. Flag burning never was, and isn’t now SPEECH.
Whoopie’s mic should always be switched off. I never give her any of my energy.
Scalia, et al’s mistake was in accepting the PREMISE of the commie lib Constitution haters on the Court, that burning our National Banner is SPEECH. Some great travesties in history were perpetrated by the SCOTUS, and IMHO, this was one of them.
You are right that Obama dashed the hopes of many blacks, ruling for wealthy white deviants while ignoring them. In the end, Hillary definitely paid a price for that; when she (and Obama) said she would continue his legacy, both really misunderstood what that sounded like to many black ears: They would gain nothing at all from a Hillary presidency.
I’m quite content to see the unassimilated blacks demonstrating with that “African-looking” flag they wave; I never had anything in common with the mutants that showed up for those protests/riots anyway, and they’re confirming that.
bfl
But for me that is the point. I want to know who my enemies are. And burning the flag is one way to identify who my enemy is.
Besides this opens up a whole can of litigation worms. When is an American flag an American flag. And American flag is 1.0 X 1.9 in dimension. If someone burns a 1.0 X 2.0 dimension flag, is it still an American flag and is it still illegal to burn it?
Let them burn it and let me be Rick Monday.
You can legally treat your copy any way you want; just dont violate anyone elses rights in the process. And don't violate laws against fires on public property.
The Constitution doesnt contain any right against seeing someone mistreat their own property. Your outrage at such an act is legal, but doesnt permit you to physically attack a person or otherwise violate their rights.
But you are always free to peacefully express an opposing viewpoint. And alert the police to any violations of public safety or anti-burning laws.
.
Anyone who desecrates our Flag should be arrested and executed by a military firing squad<<<<
If nothing else, they should be denied welfare and foodstamps since those things are provided from the sweat of hard working AMERICANS!
I think most of these people don’t have a clue as to what the symbology is regarding our flag.
I can understand hating injustice when it occurs to people within a nation, but to burn OUR flag is the same as saying our Nation is not to be regarded. The flag is a symbol of the nation’s existence, not a testiment to it’s code of justice or social expressions. f
When you respect the nation, you protect it, to secure it, show honor for it and do what you can to be the best you can be...join the army??? lol!
It’s amazing how any idiots exist any more,.
Maybe with a noose around its (the effigy's) neck?
Hate crime!
Regards,
Thanks for the note of agreement about Obama’s lack of helping Blacks. I’m sure you agree he left them much worse off too. So your comments are doubled regarding what a Hillary term in office would mean for Blacks, no hope at all.
My main beef with Blacks on the street is their anti-American rhetoric, and their backing of any old damned thing, no matter how absurd it is.
That idiot Brown who was shot in Ferguson, that is who they want to champion? Trayvon Martin? Really? A guy resisting police authority was the cause for the LA Riots in 1992. He never complied with their directives, and his passenger was taken into custody without incident.
The guy was a big tall husky Black who wouldn’t comply.
CNN was solely responsible for those riots the way it chopped the video and only revealed the part that looked bad for the police.
If the public had seen the whole thing, folks would have understood what the officers were trying to do.
Of course King leaving the hospital with 25 miles of gauze wrapping that could have been replaced by a couple of band-aids didn’t help either.
Reminded me of the Mathau/Lemmon movie, the Fortune Cookie.
Since when does “hate speech” have to apply to everyone for it to qualify as “hate speech” ?
Burning the flag is “hate speech” and a way to insult all those people who love it and believe in what it stands for.
Liberals insist on claiming comments about other groups based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion are “hate speech”. When they attack a group by burning the flag, why isn’t that also “hate speech” ?
I don’t think burning the Mexican flag would go over well at a crowd in Southern California where I live, either.
