Tension is brewing within the Dakota Access protest as complaints grow about outside activists trashing the camps, mooching off donations, and treating the anti-pipeline demonstration like a Burning Man-style festival for hippies.
Need to get something off my chest that I witnessed and found very disturbing in my brief time there that I believe many others have started to speak up about as well. White people colonizing the camps, said Alicia Smith on Facebook.
They are coming in, taking food, clothing etc and occupying space without any desire to participate in camp maintenance and without respect of tribal protocols, she said. These people are treating it like it is Burning Man or The Rainbow Gathering and I even witnessed several wandering in and out of camps comparing it to those festivals.
Her Nov. 14 post, now making the rounds on social media, said outsiders are literally subsisting entirely off the generosity of native people (AND YOUR DONATIONS if you have been donating) who are fighting to protect their water just because they can.
A local deputy who asked to remain anonymous told WDAY-AMs Rob Port that most of the protesters are white, and that some have used racial slurs against black, Hispanic and Native American officers.

If not perhaps they could all be given Blankets. It Worked for the pilgrims.
Hippies heard someone say pipes.
Actually, I did not reference or allude to in any way the color of hippies. Though they do act under color of sanity sometimes.
I google'd the map. The original route through Dakota has less water impact than the current route, and didn't cross sovereign Indian land. Looks like the lesser impact people had better lawyers because the Indians got a bad deal, and lousy PR.
However the media portrays, the opposite is a good bet for me. Of the necessity for the pipeline, I don't know. Nobody wants it through their yard is clear. How it landed on the Indians is not so clear nor is why.
The moocher class protester does not help, if even that part of the filtering media article is true.
Hippie types did the same at the Wounded Knee standoff back in 1973-74. News cameras showed lots of bearded white hippies there with the Indians.
The good news is this hippie fest is about to come to an abrupt end. We have a saying up here: “40 below keeps out riff-raff”.
Our first blizzard is supposedly to happen now. Dec - Feb are the coldest months, expect actual temps to be at least near zero, possibly lows down to -20F. Add to that a 40 mph wind out on the prairie, and no one will be out and about partying.
True story: I bought a new 2007 Chevy Colorado. The actual December temp in 2007 was -40F. When opening the door on the truck the plastic handle just snapped in two. The grease in the door latches was so stiff they would not catch and had to hold the door closed by hand. When driven through a small snow drift, a fog light broke off.
In weather like this, dirt construction still goes on, but the protesters will not.
LOL No, no , no. It wasn’t the Pilgrims.
Allegedly it was Lord Jeffery Amherst. However I don’t think there is any evidence that he did that. He may have written a letter about it or someone wrote to him about it.
Hopefully they kept their clothes on.
“In Ft. Bragg, CA, this is known as Monday. Monday”
What’s going on there? Haven’t been there in a loooong time. Used to be a fairly nice area.
hippies are doing it for free. The protest is a rent - a-mob.
Otherwise pretty much the same as it has been for 20 years or more.
Duh. You throw a protest and the hippy types are bound to show up.
Feed em some buffalo guts.
They’ll be spinning the wheels on their vans to get out of there.
What do these people not understand about oil being a natural product?
It’s a natural as sunflower seeds or kale, or sand...granola is less a natural product than crude oil.
Just what I was thinking. Can’t believe those hippies are camping out in North Dakota in the winter. This ain’t Woodstock in the summer — you are right — when the temperature drops, hopefully, they will leave.
When I lived in New Orleans, Jim Stewart, a DJ at the now defunct WNOE (AM), would put on this fake lurid voice and say: “You show me a hippie chickie and I will show you a good time.” One of the great DJs, I managed to catch him at the end of his career, evidently. I have often wondered whatever became of him.
Bureau of Land management or black lives matter?
Hippies? Nah!...They’re just hippie wannabes anymore.
