Report: Presidential electors planning to undermine Electoral College
The Hill ^ | 11/22/2016 | Harper Neidig

A number of Democratic Electoral College electors are planning to use their votes to undermine the election process in opposition to President-elect Donald Trump, Politico is reporting.

Some electors are lobbying their Republican counterparts to vote for someone other than Trump in an attempt to deny him the 270 votes required to elect him, according to the news outlet. They are also contemplating whether to cast their votes for someone other than Hillary Clinton

With at least six electors already vowing to become "faithless," the defection could be the most significant since 1808, when six Democratic-Republican electors refused to vote for James Madison, choosing vice presidential candidate George Clinton instead.

The electors acknowledge that it is unlikely that they will be able to block Trump from gaining office, Politico reported, but they are optimistic that their effort will raise enough questions about the Electoral College to reform or abolish it.

"If it gets into the House, the controversy and the uncertainty that would immediately blow up into a political firestorm in the U.S. would cause enough people — my hope is — to look at the whole concept of the Electoral College," one of the electors told Politico.

It’s unclear how many, if any, Republicans have signed on to the effort.

Twenty-nine states legally require their electors to obey the results of the popular vote in their state.

True, but that method was chosen by the legislatures of Maine and Nebraska. The poster I responded to suggested that all states be mandated to award electors in winner take all fashion. Such a mandate is unconstitutional since it usurps the power granted to the state legislatures to determine the method of selecting electors.

If electors are faithless, I believe it goes to Congress.

“A number of Democratic Electoral College electors are planning to use their votes to undermine the election process”

Yeah? Well, SO WHAT!

What are they going to do, NOT vote for Hillary? Fine, she’ll lose by more.

Vote for Trump? That would send a message, though it wouldn’t change the result.

Vote for Bernie? Vote for Saul Alinsky? Vote for Obama? Not only not much difference from each other, but it won’t change the results.

Oh, they’d have to convince 38 Republican Electors to change their votes directly to Hillary to make a difference - and that simply won’t happen. If anything, Trump is more popular now than on Election Day, he’s mended fences within the Party, he’s demonstrated his maturity and good judgment via speeches and the transition process...IOW, there is NO REASON WHATSOEVER for any Republican Elector to change their vote.

Further and finally, from a legal standpoint, the Congress can reject the choice of the Electoral College.

From a practical POV, changing to Hillary would be tantamount to an insurrection, and would likely trigger ENORMOUS unrest across the country, if not actual civil war (and Republicans possess FAR more than 50% of the 400 million guns out there. Further, if it is difficult enough to do a transition in the time allotted, how much MORE difficult would it be to shorten that period by 5 or 6 weeks, a problem compounded by the absolute certainty that this whole matter would be tied up in the federal courts (and, ultimately, the Supreme Court)...thereby paralyzing the nation.

Ain’t gonna happen. This is just a Leftist wet dream...wait until they wake up and Obama’s legacy is shredded in just a few months.

Thanks for the link. I watched another video on that page with Tucker Carlson taking on 2 of these idiot electors.

I like how these libtards are all for our Constitution when it suits their needs but ignore things they don't like that helped build this unconstitutional corrupt massive government and debt that is undermining our freedoms and liberties. And liberals wonder why we can't stand them. Here is the link to that video:

You need to take a breath and check yourself.

The one thing we do not need to be doing is running around like chickens with our heads cut off. IF you had read any of my other comments I have been very supportive of the EC (because I believe in it). The wags and yobs opening their yaps now are the same paid rent a mob commies that do this EVERY election.

Before Trump won the EC the news stories were all out there that he would win the popular vote and be slaughtered in the EC.

DOn’t you get it? It’s what they do. Don’t buy into their nutso

THe biggest example was not 1808, but 1836. The entire Virginia electoral delegation refused to vote for the VP candidate who won the state, because he was found to have been sleeping with one of his slaves.

This denied him the majority, but the senate then gave him the VP victory anyway.

The funniest electoral vote story is the 1796 election, before they switched to having separate president and VP elections, and instead each elector had 2 votes to cast.

IN order to get the president you wanted, the electors were supposed to all vote for president, and then one of them was supposed to vote for a different person instead of the VP of their party, but it was so hard to communicate in the day, and there was a lot of manipulation, so they screwed it up and Jefferson ended up winning the VP slot, giving a split ticket.

Like Hamilton convinced some Jefferson supporters to vote for Pickney in the hopes of getting Pickney the Presidency instead of Adams — but Adams’s people found out and a bunch of his electors didn’t vote for Pickney, and that gave Jefferson enough to win the VP slot.

Then, in 1800, Jefferson and Burr tied, because they didn’t get one elector to not vote for Burr, sending that election to the house, where it took like 36 rounds of voting before jefferson won (in part because Hamilton, in the other party, threw his support to Jefferson).

This up-ends everything I was taught about 19th century America.

On January 7, when Congress opens the new Congress, they will move to certify the Electoral College Votes.

If there are 270+ for the President-Elect, they certify him as the President of the United States.

There won’t be anything else other than 270+ for DJT.

IF any Elector voted contrary to their state, I would like to see President Trump cause that Elector to be investigated for receiving a bribe OR falling under the coercion of an opposing party. In EITHER CASE, I would like to see the FBI find there is wrongdoing and refer it to the DOJ for prosecuting a felony of electoral tampering.

Examples must be made of the knuckleheads engaging in this activity so that others will know there are consequences and will think twice before attempting this in the future.

It is legal and Constitutional. At worst it will push the official selection into the House of Representatives. Any guesses on how the House would go? hmmm, on the edge of my seat here biting my lip.
