If Jeff Sessions leaves the Senate, who replaces him?

"...If Sessions heads to the Trump administration, he would leave behind a coveted seat in the United States Senate. Governor Bentley would appoint Sessions's replacement in the short-term and set a date for a statewide election to fill the seat.

Given the importance of the seat, we certainly shouldn't rush this. Bentley ought to appoint someone with an eye toward an election being held during the 2018 midterms. Special elections are expensive and often feature low turnout. With most of us experiencing campaign exhaustion, it's prudent to set the election during a normal cycle.

So whom might Bentley appoint if Sessions departs? Several sources I've spoken with suggest a few names on an emerging short list: Representative Martha Roby, Attorney General Luther Strange, state senator Trip Pittman, and state senator Cam Ward.

Like Bentley, Martha Roby didn't back Donald Trump. ..."

For you folks who are knowledgeable of Alabama politics, who would be the best replacement for Jeff Sessions?

IMHO it certainly needs to be someone in the Jeff Sessions mode. In the linked article, some names are mentioned that appear to be RINOs (e.g., they did not back Trump in the election).

What about Jonathan McConnell who challenged Shelby in this year's primary and was endorsed by Citizens United. Is he any good?

I would hope Gary Palmer but Bentley will appoint a liberal to moderate Republican.

Regardless of how the vacancy is handled in Alabama wouldn't his replacement be up in November 2018?

I HATE the heat.

Surely you know I would have moved South LONG ago but I LOVE the cold weather.

It’s a deal breaker and that sucks.

>>If I move there now can I run? :)<<

Based on hiLIARy’s carpet-bagging the other direction, the answer is an unqualified YES.

That is my biggest concern about Sessions leaving, there are too few Senators who are on the side of the citizens and the rule of law as it is.

You can count them on one hand.

McCain, Flake, Rubio, Graham, Hatch, Hoeven, Heller, Mrkowsky, Corker, Alexander, Ayotte and Kirk all voted for Gang of Eight.

Ayotte and Kirk were the only ones removed from office.
