President-elect Donald Trump's immigration adviser Kris Kobach warned Tuesday no one living here illegally will get a "free pass" and predicted many immigrants would leave as jobs and benefits "dry up."
Kobach, one of the architects of Arizona's anti-immigration law SB1070, made the statement on Fox News when he was asked what Trump plans to do about people who are illegally, but are working hard and are not regarded as criminals. Kobach reached back to the immigration speech Trump made in August in Phoenix, when there were thoughts then-candidate Trump might be easing his view on immigrants.
In that speech, Trump said "every person in this country has to follow American law. No person living here illegally gets a free pass, like they did under the Obama administration," Kobach said.
"The jobs are going to dry up, the welfare benefits are going to dry up, and a lot of people who may not be criminal illegal aliens may decide, hey, it's getting hard to disobey federal law, and may leave on their own," he said.
Undocumented immigrants cannot receive the government benefit that is often called welfare, but is officially known as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. They also cannot apply for healthcare or other benefits.
The federally and state funded program is designed to assist children, so a U.S. citizen child of a parent not legally here, can qualify for it. The same may be true for health care or other programs.
The "self-deportation" idea has raised questions in the past about how far officials will go to "dry up" any benefits. It can create problems when applied to mixed status families, particularly when parents are illegally in the country but children are not.

Well, I kinda agree, but technically they’re immigrants. Logically they’re invaders. What irks me is the great push to remove the term “illegal” from the conversation. As if it’s not illegal, just maybe objectionable.
The difference between you and them is you did it legally. You did, didn’t you? I’m presuming you did because of your reaction, most legal immigrants are not happy at all about illegal immigration. You and many others worked a lot, studied and paid a price to come here. Then you see other people who walk in illegally and get all sorts of government freebies, without lifting a finger. I know it would make me mad...

I don’t believe in anchor babies, because when this nation was forming, people of other countries were concerned that if they came to visit family, and a birth occurred, that the nation could keep the child as it’s own, and the parents wouldn’t be able to take that child home. It was never intended that someone born here was automatically a citizen, especially if the parents were citizens of another country.

The anchor baby law made sense over 100 years ago when the west was sparsely settled. It has long outlived the reason it was enacted.
That law should have been written with a 25 year lifespan. I imagine there are plenty of laws that have also outlived themselves.

You’re right. Whatever our political orientation, one thing that unites us is our objection to this coddling to illegal immigrants. It really fries my circuitry.
And conducting an ongoing criminal enterprise in the house — ie, living as fugitives from federal law — should make them unfit parents. Nobody on the left seems concerned abut that, so a little thing like abandonment won’t phase them either.

First off I agree this mess has to stop. “Forthwith” as some might emphasize.
Second, any discussion begins-ends with the operative word “ILLEGAL”; people thus categorized are felony-grade lawbreakers.
Third, whether by personal fault or behavior of their government, they’re here and more so by lack of political will than law enforcement, we’re responsible for them.
Fourth, one can seriously argue that lack of political will to support a “Broken Windows” policy in enforcing EXISTING immigration law has brought to the present.
Our end of the road immigration mess is more political failure than anything else. Too bad we can’t deport politicians. But then that would be committing war crimes before a declaration of war.
I’ve always believed self-deportation is the key.
