A Russian fighter jet crashed in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to land on Russias sole aircraft carrier, which is stationed off the Syrian coast, the Russian Ministry of Defense said Monday in a statement.
The plane went down several miles from the carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, according to the Ministry of Defense. The pilot ejected and was recovered.
The health of the pilot is not in danger. The pilot is ready to carry out orders, the Ministry of Defense said.
Earlier in the day, Pentagon officials said they had indications that the Russians had lost a plane, and Fox News quoting intelligence officials reported that the aircraft, a MiG-29K, went down after appearing to have mechanical issues shortly after takeoff.

There goes 2,104,110,000 Russian Roubles
It seems to me that it might help to be closer than "several miles" to the aircraft carrier when "trying to land" it...
Ooooh! Another case of premature ejection?
Woof, woof, woof - seems he screwed the pooch.
Great scene from The Hunt For Red October.
That was my first thought:)
:) I wasn’t sure which side to post but I knew any number of fellow Freepers would complete the conversation!
China lost their first woman pilot, they are the "winner" http://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2016/11/14/Chinas-first-female-J-10-fighter-pilot-killed-in-air-crash/1671479132022/
US (F18A below) and Russia are runner-ups. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-fighter-jet-collision-san-diego-20161109-story.html
A Mig-29K? Why bother? An SU-35? That's the one you go after!
Was Lt John McCain flying it? ??? HEHEHEHE Look in Mcain’s flight history and carrier landings. hehe lol,...
I know,...I’m mean.
It could have been worse. Instead of going into the drink he could have augured in to the stern of the carrier. But he didn’t. Darn it!
Standard for a carrier during rapid transit when in inclement weather or not conducting extensive air ops is to only have alert aircraft on deck. Remainder are in the lower hanger bay protected from weather and receiving scheduled or ahead of schedule maintenance.
While on the Independence (CV62) we would have down days for additional maintenance on the aircraft and/or deck equipment where the only thing topside was the rescue helo and the alert 5/15. Wasn’t often, but moreso than most realize. Crews gotta rest or they start breaking just like the aircraft.
Advanced? I read where (DM)it’s a 1980’s aircraft built in response to our F-15.
it’s been said on FR many times... Having an aircraft carrier is not the same as having an experienced air crew on an aircraft carrier.
LOL, so true.
Maybe the saying, "a miss is as good as a mile" was coined for this exact scenario.

I am underwhelmed with sympathy over anything bad that happens to any Russian military. They are not our buddies, as some here seem to think.
John McCain qualified as an enemy ace - he lost 5 aircraft.
He lost 4 aircraft to “accidents” and one to enemy action
and crased landing on a carrier into the island.
