A Russian fighter jet crashed in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to land on Russias sole aircraft carrier, which is stationed off the Syrian coast, the Russian Ministry of Defense said Monday in a statement.
The plane went down several miles from the carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, according to the Ministry of Defense. The pilot ejected and was recovered.
The health of the pilot is not in danger. The pilot is ready to carry out orders, the Ministry of Defense said.
Earlier in the day, Pentagon officials said they had indications that the Russians had lost a plane, and Fox News quoting intelligence officials reported that the aircraft, a MiG-29K, went down after appearing to have mechanical issues shortly after takeoff.

Did the Crew drink the antifreeze ?
Orders to be carried out: Return to Moscow you dolt!
Best wishes to the aircrew.
Frankly, I’m concerned when any pilot’s life is threatened in a peacetime crash. Russian or not.
Does that leave them one aircraft left to fight the Syrian war? Seems like I saw their carrier transiting with 2 aircraft on the deck...
It’s not like it hasn’t happened to us.
I agree with you.
There are actuarial tables that tell with reasonable accuracy what you will lose for any deployment. If you put x men and y machines in a given local for a given time, some of the men will die of natural causes or accidents, some of the equipment will be destroyed. It’s the cost of doing business.
How long before Israel retrieves the wreckage ?
Gotta love the Russian attitude - "ready to carry out orders."
Not resting in a hospital, cleared by medical staff, back with his unit, on leave.
No.
Rather, braced with a foot on the ladder to the cockpit, helmet on, ready to scream into the sky and kick some alien ass!
We have a bit more history with NavAir ... just about anything that can happen has happened to us.
“...ready to carry out orders...” The last order was “Land the F&$%%@^$*&*ing airplane!!!!!!”
So much for that one.
I remember those stories, from Afghanistan.
"Andrei, you've lost another submarine?"
The last order might have been “EJECTEJECTEJECT!!!”
Maybe the pilot couldnt see through all the black smoke?
Thank goodness the pilot survived.
It’s kind of our fault. If they weren’t being engaged in a proxy war by the US govt they might not have to be flying missions there. But then I guess they’d be flying missions somewhere.
