A Russian fighter jet crashed in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to land on Russia’s sole aircraft carrier... ...The plane went down several miles from the carrier... It seems to me that it might help to be closer than "several miles" to the aircraft carrier when "trying to land" it...

Maybe the saying, "a miss is as good as a mile" was coined for this exact scenario.
