500,000 People Sign Petition Asking Electoral College to Pick Clinton as President Instead of Trump
people.com ^ | November 10, 2016 | Lindsay Kimble

A petition on Change.org calling for the Electoral College to elect Hillary Clinton as President has earned over half of the signatures needed for it to be sent to the governing body.

The petition, launched on Wednesday after Donald Trump was elected President, calls for the Electoral College to “ignore their states’ votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton.”

Although Trump won over the 270 necessary electoral votes to secure the Presidency, Clinton narrowly earned the nation’s popular vote.

The Electoral College – which was first introduced in 1804 – is comprised of 538 electors. Each state’s number of electors is decided by its number of members in Congress, which is dependent on the state’s population. So, when American citizens cast their ballots, they aren’t directly voting for president – they’re voting for electors. This year, Trump took 279, to Clinton’s 228.

I got that World Series analogy to explain the electoral college from a conservative talk show host here in Denver, years ago. It works every time because it is so simple and relates to something that everyone understands. You can use it to really get to the point by just asking someone, "So if one team happens to win one game by 10 runs, but loses four games by one run each, should they be declared the winner just because they scored six more runs total, while the other team won the series four games to one?"

Then, once you have them somewhat understanding, explain that if we only used the popular vote to decide presidential elections, the candidates would only need to care about the desires of the people in a small number of very populated cities in a handful of states. What the vast majority of the states wanted would be totally irrelevant.

That's when you go in for the kill by using their own rhetoric against them and telling them that, "It wouldn't be FAIR for only 3 or 4 states to dictate to the rest of the country, now would it?"

The Electoral College – which was first introduced in 1804

This is an egregious error. The Electoral College was in the original 1787 Constitution, but was amended in 1804 after the debacle of 1800 in which the contest had to be decided in the House of Representatives.

I am loath to suggest this but there is actually one voice that might calm things down should he decide to speak (and he allegedly supported Trump). It's someone I have absolutely no use for: Ralph Nader. And I have absolutely no use for him for a very good reason: he advocates a "left-right alliance" of people like BDS and Pat Buchanan would join together against the common foe (You-Know-Who). But as he does advocate a left-right alliance and has considerable cachet on the far left, he might could help calm things down should he choose to do so.

Apparently he has not yet done this.

If the EC had been “introduced” it would have been eliminated long ago. Eliminating something that is part of the Constitution is a bit harder than eliminating something introduced.

They had their chance in the voting booth.

I hope the electoral college isn’t manipulated or intimidated into capitulating.

We are a baseball family-——we would all get the picture.

It’s funny, but when I was going over it in my mind I had 1-0,1-0,1.0,10-0, and 1-0 as the 5 game scores-—the losing team winning Game 4.

Odd that you had the same numbers.

I’ve always wondered who that little girl really is, and whether she’s ever grown up.

(I’d bet that almost all of the kids who’ve been out there blocking traffic and burning the Flag over the last couple of days, never even bothered to REGISTER to vote; much less actually voted - IF they were old enough in the first place :-)

Petitions are enumerated in the Constitution which is great.

What they desire,

50,000,000 million petitioned the electoral college to pick Trump.
100:1, you lose.

I had a similar experience with 4 of my 5 kids. The last one can’t vote yet. But they were very happy to vote for the winner. And they are very quick to identify spin when they here it on the radio or TV.

You know what?

There’s no proof that Clinton won the popular vote.

Mr. mm pointed out that some states have laws that if one candidate wins by more than a certain margin, the mail in or absentee ballots are NOT counted.

And also, there’s the military ballots that are often not counted.

And IMO, if they want to claim that she won the popular vote, each and every state would need to count ALL their votes and take out the ones that are a result of vote fraud, like mail in ones for dead people or those who are not registered correctly or are not legal citizens.

Before a president could be elected by popular vote, then they would have to PROVE that the individual actually got the popular vote in an honest election.

What’s the need for all this rigmarole? Why doesn’t Obama just float an executive order declaring Hillary to be the next president? (/sarc)

All they teach is Howard Zinn. Trust me.

I read his alternative history. Family member sent it and said it was fact. That's when I pulled the plug on the last family member. I wouldn't believe it either but it's required reading in some college classes.
