The problem for them is if they become a state they can no longer be the seat of our federal government.
DC already has 3 electoral votes but no Senators and only a non-voting ‘delegate’ in Congress (I think).
But if we simply must make DC a state, which we surely do not, then compromise by taking northern Virginia (Fairfax County, Arlington, Alexandria) and adding it back to the District. DC is already 100% Democrat and taking NOVA away from Virginia would make Virginia relatively safe Republican.

If DC is allowed to become as state then eastern Washington and eastern Oregon should become independent states also. And Pennsylvania should secede from Philadelphia.

The new state would have two Senators and one Representative (I am assuming they don’t have the population to warrant more than one Representative). The existing 438 Representatives may be redistributed.
And some Silicon Valley billionaires are trying to make a petition for CA to secede. I'd call that a pretty good trade: California's 55 EV would no longer be a gimme for the Dems.
Might be a tempting trade. Hell .. I'd be willing to let Kalifornikatia go to Meh-hee-coe and let that craphole become THEIR damn problem! That way, Kalifornikatians would need a passport and citizenship to move to other states!

Doesn’t matter where they go, they are never to become a state. They are a district and either they remain that way or they get folded into Maryland or Virginia or a combination of both.
As it stands, we must push for Trump to pink slip a large percentage of Federal Workers. He should eliminate four Departments on his first day.
