Putin's new 'super tank': British intelligence warns Russian vehicle is 'the most revolutionary change in tank design in the last half century' and leaves the West totally outgunned

British military intelligence officers have issued a warning over a new Russian 'super tank' which they claim is far superior to anything which is available to Nato.

The document claims that Britain's Challenger II main battle tank could be overpowered by the Kremlin's new Armata tank.

Officials believe the new Russian tank is 'revolutionary' and blames the government for failing to provide a proper response.

The current policy is to not consider a new main battle tank for at least 20 years as heavy armour is not suited to countering the threat posed by lightly-armed Jihadis.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, the internal military document said: 'Without hyperbole, Armata represents the most revolutionary step change in tank design in the last half century.'

It is not high on many's hit parade, but with it's high power to weight ratio, compact size, and omnivorous capability, I am flummoxed why a Wankel ( especially with Turbocompounding or CREEV ) has not been looked into as an alternative to Diesels and Turbines in Tanks....

That would be a game changer IMHO, nevermind tanks, what about Subs, especially with the lower vibration levels...

The M4A3E2 was a capable tank.
It’s interesting that the Israelis were able to squeeze some useful service out of the WW2 Sherman all the way up to 1973. I know they put a 105mm gun on it, but I read somewhere the replaced the Sherman turret with the French AMX turret. Do you know if that’s so or not?

“Drones + satellites > tanks”

In a total War the satellites are the weak link.

How about bankrupting America by forcing us into a new arms race? Reagan did it to the Soviet Union. Putin can do it to us.

I believe the Super Shermans had a new turret. It did come from France but I think it was designed for the new model. Some Shermans fought into the 1980s with Israel's Arab allies. Chile had some operational almost into the 21 Century.

The Russians use a different transmission and gearing. Both the engine and transmission can be replaced quickly under battlefield conditions by the 3 man crew - which is something no western tank can match despite the other specs.

A bomb or cruze missle equipped with hundreds of heat seekink bomblets render tank warfare obsolete except as a troop support unit.

THAT’s the question about which no one is honest in their analysis and most answers at FR are categorically rooted in emotion rather than facts.

The neat thing about the T-14 Armata is that it is just one platform (the one that is a tank) in a whole family of combat vehicles. The west uses separate designs for each combat vehicle.

But yet, there are only around 550 T-90’s in Russian military service. Does this mean the Russian Army wants to buy large quantities of the T-14 Armata instead?

My worry is that some of us take our military for granted and are complacent. If there us ever a confrontation, we might not come out ahead and it will mean American casualties.

We've enjoyed the luxury of being able to turn our military into a social experiment because it's been a long time since we've fought a real war against a real adversary. Babysitting Arabs doesn't count.
