Nearly 10,000 soldiers, many of whom served multiple combat tours, have been ordered to repay large enlistment bonuses and slapped with interest charges, wage garnishments and tax liens if they refuse after audits revealed widespread overpayments by the California Guard at the height of the wars last decade.
Investigations have determined that lack of oversight allowed for widespread fraud and mismanagement by California Guard officials under pressure to meet enlistment targets.

When was the last time welfare payments were sought because of “widespread fraud and mismanagement”?
That’s disgusting. Again, the war on the military.
People who got the bonus actually served the extra time. That is all that really matters. If the paper work is screwed up but the solder did his duty it is the fault of the personnel admin clerks who were poorly trained or improperly informed.
Obama’s Pentagon going after common soldiers. They did what they agreed to do. Obama is going after them and bankrupting them for doing it.
Elections have consequences.
How about the 40 acres and a mule tax credit?

I wonder how much of this the IRS actually recovered?
Sounds like a breach of contract to me.
I wonder if they will go After the ones that died in combat?
This makes my blood boil!
Panty-waste left will bend over backwards hauling in supposed refugees, give free everything to illegal immigrants, and screw over the soldiers.
What a crock!
Why not take the money from the fraudulent bonuses paid to VA officials?
Precisely what I was thinking.
I wouldn’t put it past them.
If some government worker signed a contract then the military member should NOT be held accountable. The government has the responsibility to ensure contracts are proper drafted.
I didn’t see a single reference to any of them contacting their congressmen. I know it’s been going on a long time but their first step should have been to Congress...there are some representatives who will go to the wall for constituents who seek their help. There are few things in life more stressful than getting caught up in the “legal” system. ODD how the government chooses to apply the law, isn’t it?
I heard a snippet of Hillary at a rally yesterday (?) and she referred to Trump’s statement that he would appoint a special prosecutor to put her in jail. Her response: “We have laws. We have courts.”
That statement is tailor made for Trump’s next rally! Sure could have fooled us, Hillary. I want to see the laws that have been passed and are enforced that state “NOT TO BE APPLIED TO THE CLINTONS.”
It’s California. What do you expect? Wonder if they will demand that the politicians give back their pay?
Andreas fault.
Two questions.
1. Was there fraud involved in the bonuses?
2. Where the correct procedures followed in awarding the bonuses?
IF the answer is “yes” to 1 or 2, they should be paid back. I have had similar things happen to me in private industry (a bonus paid out when it should not have been). It sucked, and I went into debt to pay it off. But the fact remained that there was a mistake in paying out the bonuses (or fraud, never figured out which), and the company figured it out. Now, I left that firm quickly after that, but after reviewing the documentation with a lawyer I saw that the company was correct. The terms listed (which did change right before the bonuses were paid) meant that I didn’t get one.
If the law and rules are not followed, you don’t get to benefit.
Yep. Everything we need to know about despots is in the history books.
