Federal regulation threatens Florida’s historic premium cigar industry

The Obama administrations’s regulatory assault on Florida’s premium cigar industry appears tailor made for an election season rife with populist indignation.

Newly approved federal regulations are on track to decimate Florida’s historic and culturally distinct manufacturing industry, while paving the way for legalized Cuban cigars to obtain a competitive advantage.

Affected business owners and manufacturing workers at places like J.C. Newman’s Cigar Co. in Tampa would rather avoid politics altogether, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has premium cigars firmly in its crosshairs, citing concerns about youth access to tobacco and improving public health. . .

FROM ARTICLE: Last week, the Obama administration announced a new round of executive orders designed to increase trade with the communist government in Havana. Americans can now bring back an unlimited number of Cuban cigars to the United States.

“To add insult to injury, the president announced an opening to Cuba, which means Cuban cigars are allowed in the country and they don’t have to go through any of these new requirements,” said Rubio.

Obama has transformed America into a corporatist state where those with the right connections get special treatment while their competitors are driven out of business by the government. A glaring early example of the Obama Regime weaponizing the regulatory agencies was the Gibson Guitar Company raid.

Does anyone think that Hillary would be less antagonistic toward small and medium sized (read not connected) businesses?

I think a big sticking point with Cuban cigars is actually copyrights on cigar names.

Likely the Cubans are going to get the US copyrights on brand names that Cuba uses around the world, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a simple matter.

Rubio is a fraud on this issue, and on similiar concerns.

Other producers of products have been hurt by trade from Communist China, yet Rubio never made a stand against that. Not many people have made a stand against trade with communist countries, especially those that helped to kill or maim thousands of Americans.

Cigars are not cigarettes. You don't smoke a cigar one after another, you enjoy it.

Morons...

No difference between a cigar or a cigarette other than the fact you smoke a cigar continuously for maybe 15 - 20 minutes......Not much of a trade off.

Obviously, you have never smoked a cigar if you have no clue about the difference in smoking one, or the other.

Most people don’t inhale cigars.

Oh really? What's your nose for since cigars are smoked for the aroma?

And don't even try to deny the overwhelming evidence that cigars cause not only mouth cancers but esophageal cancer as well........

Look dude, I'm a cigarette smoker and I'm fully aware of all the evidence against smoking so don't even try to tell me that cigars are safer than cigarettes.........If they were, your government imposed smoking bans would not include cigars.

Not to worry. Florida’s cigar industry is dead anyway now that obama has allowed Cuba to flood the market.

This column goes way beyond cigars.

<>Rubio said he hoped a bipartisan bill, sponsored by Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., to exempt premium cigars from the administration’s new restrictions would pass Congress before the end of the year.<>

Congress must pass a law to prevent a regulation with the force of law. (??!!!)

This isn’t republican government and is why I will sit out the congressional portion of the November election
