NEW YORK (Reuters) – Donald Trump has repeatedly called this year’s presidential election rigged and has coyly said “I will keep you in suspense” on whether he would accept a Hillary Clinton victory, but many Republicans are less circumspect, according to a new poll.

Only half of Republicans would accept Clinton, the Democratic nominee, as their president. And if she wins, nearly 70 percent said it would be because of illegal voting or vote rigging, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday.

Conversely, seven out of 10 Democrats said they would accept a Trump victory and less than 50 percent would attribute it to illegal voting or vote rigging, the poll showed.

The findings come after repeated statements by Trump that the media and the political establishment have rigged the election against him. He also has made a number of statements encouraging his supporters to fan out on Election Day to stop illegible voters from casting ballots.

The U.S. government has accused Russia of a campaign of cyber attacks against Democratic Party organizations and state election systems.

Clinton has said she will accept the results of the election no matter the outcome.

The poll showed there is broad concern across the political spectrum about voting issues such as ineligible voters casting ballots, voter suppression, and the actual vote count, but Republicans feel that concern more acutely.

For example, nearly eight out of 10 Republicans are concerned about the accuracy of the final vote count. And though generally they believe they will be able to cast their ballot, only six out of 10 are confident their vote will be counted accurately.

Among Democrats, about six out of 10 are concerned about the vote count. They, too, believe they wi1l be able to cast their ballot, but eight out of 10 are confident their vote will be counted accurately.

“Republicans are just more worried about everything than Democrats,” said Lonna Atkeson, a professor at the University of New Mexico and head of the Center for the Study of Voting, Elections, and Democracy.

FLEE THE COUNTRY?

Additionally, seven out of 10 Republicans are concerned about issues such as vote buying, faulty voting machines, or confusing ballot designs. Six out of 10 Democrats feel the same way.

Nearly eight out of 10 Republicans are concerned that ineligible voters, including non-citizens, will illegally cast ballots. Four out of 10 Democrats feel the same way.

Six out of 10 respondents, regardless of party, say they are concerned about issues such as voter intimidation and suppression.

Atkeson said the level of concern and mistrust in the system, especially among Republicans, is unprecedented.

“I’ve never seen an election like this. Not in my lifetime. Certainly not in modern history.” The difference, she said, is Trump. “It has to be the candidate effect.”

She worries that the lack of trust is dangerous. It is one thing to not trust government, but quite another to doubt the election process. “Then the entire premise of democracy comes into question,” she said.

About one in five Democrats said they would protest if their candidate loses. Slightly fewer Republicans said they would do the same. Fewer than one in 10 Democrats said they are prepared to take up arms in opposition compared to fewer than one in 20 Republicans.

Democrats are also are three times as likely to say they would leave the country.

There is one area where there is little disagreement: Most people do not expect the losing candidate to concede the race gracefully.

The poll surveyed 1,192 American adults online from Oct. 17 to 21. The results have a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points. The credibility interval for Democrats is 5.1 percentage points; for Republicans it is 5.5 points.

I’m unclear about the whole question. What does “accept” mean? Do they just mean they will just say to themselves “I don’t accept the results” and grumble on. Do they mean they will grab pitchforks and storm Washington?

As for the candidate, there are laws. If the margin of error is small enough in a college, he has the right for a recount.

If you're still looking for a reason to vote for Trump, here it is!! And if it doesn't scare the hell out of you, check for a pulse! If no pulse, you're probably a Chicago/Cook County voter!

I don’t trust this article. Reuters wrote the article but they don’t mention anywhere what the actual question was. So they are editorializing and by not showing the poll, we can even surmise that they are twisting the conclusion of the results to fit their spin.

Nope. The difference is the voters. Trump was nominated because the voters are waking up to vote fraud.

I’m always the most dubious of urban precincts. Those places are an epidemic of voter fraud (and with no Republicans to monitor certain areas, they can do their worst). I’ve always found it very peculiar for certain groups that aren’t exactly known for living up to their civic responsibilities of keeping neighborhoods safe have “turnouts” that either match or exceed their registered voters (which often includes hundreds or thousands of deceased).

It’s also even more peculiar that vote totals manage to be higher than they were 4 years earlier in places where the overall population has declined. That not only doesn’t jibe with common sense, it doesn’t jibe with basic logic and statistics: lower population means fewer voters not more voters.

“Where 11% of Hard Clinton supporters could be dissuaded from voting by a strong storm and 17% would balk at a 90 minute wait, Trump’s strong support only diminishes in the events of catastrophic attacks on America. Some demographics (blue-collar white men between the ages of 30 and 64) were more likely to say they would vote in the event of an active riot standing between them and the ballot.”

I agree 1000 percent. Those boroughs are the SHADIEST things going when it comes to voting.

You can “not accept” it til the cows come home, but Hillary will simply stand there propped up and, like Obama, arrogantly proclaim “I won!” What does “not accepting” really entail? You can disagree with it, but not much else. Will there be nationwide riots with Trump supporters burning down the suburbs? I doubt it.

Seriously, can someone tell me what can really be done except bitch and whine? Lots of people claim they’ll leave the country, but none will. I made that sacrifice when the Kenyan Spider Monkey was “elected”, but NO ONE came with me. Are you willing to stop paying taxes, and risk the wrath of Hillary’s IRS? Few will, and those will be made examples for the rest. There won’t be an armed insurrection, and I doubt any real protests.

Not watching TV is not much of a “non-acceptance”, and Hillary won’t know or care.

The only thing to do at this time is to make sure you get off your butt and VOTE!!! If everyone mobilizes themselves and everyone they know to get to the polls and vote, maybe the need for the decisions above may never happen.

She worries that the lack of trust is dangerous. It is one thing to not trust government, but quite another to doubt the election process. “Then the entire premise of democracy comes into question,” she said.

It would go away, if the elite overlords would just listen and allow a paper trail in each precinct. But they won’t.

BTW, this was presented as a bunch of crazies driven by Trump’s rhetoric, but I was surprised by the closeness of the results between Republicans and Democrats.

Now we know exactly why TRUMP, reportedly, has spent $3 million dollars on campaign lawyers fees.

He will be at least prepared for battle where necessary.

The source was criticizing the expenditure, casting a raised brow.

Half Of Republicans Would Reject Election Result If Clinton Wins: Reuters/Ipsos

That's very disappointing. It should be all of republicans rejecting the elections result. It would be equal to how democrats never accept the election of a republican.

Besides, rejecting Hillary would be the most patriotic thing any American could do, since she is the "enemy within" and would be just another Obama, who we could never stomach for 8 years.

Didn't Hillary say that Bush was selected and not elected? She never accepted Bush as president, even if she had to tolerate him; but tolerance is not the same as acceptance.

No the difference is that the democrats have been exposed and they have taken to doing their cheating on such a large scale that they can longer hide what they are doing. And the ridiculous rulings by Federal judges are another sign that the entire system is corrupt. People can see that.

I'll believe that when she loses by a narrow margin, and doesn't throw an army of lawyers at it.
