West Coast now under web attack as East Coast recovers
Mercury News ^ | Oct. 21, 2016 | Ethan Baron

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is reportedly investigating. The attack raised fears that this could be a trial run for an attempt at a major disruption of the U.S. presidential election.

While many of the websites affected by the first attack, which hit the East Coast, are back up, sites hosted on the West Coast, including Twitter and Recode, have been hit, and were unavailable for many as of 11 a.m. Friday. As of 11 a.m., Dyn’s online update about its response to the attacks said the company was continuing to “investigate and mitigate.”

The outages appear to have resulted from a “distributed denial of services” attack on web hosting firm Dyn. Firms such as Dyn “act as the internet’s phone book and facilitate your request to go to a certain webpage and make sure you are taken to the right place. If the (domain name server) provider that handles requests for Twitter is down, well, good luck getting to Twitter,” explains Gizmodo.

It can’t be a trial run. We have had Obama safeguarding our nation for almost eight years and, according to him, it is all our enemies who are on the run.

I just think about how foolish it would be for Wikileaks to suggest that they are responsible for shutting down these sites. Government powers could go a long way in using that against them. Another reason why the message is suspicious.

Anything that uses internet for comm can be affected. Processing credit cards, telephone systems, atm’s, you name it.

What partly explains it is the obvious fact that some kind of load has been removed from the server. It is possibly as simple as maybe fewer people can access FR causing it to speed up for those who can. Other possibilities are that certain hostile actions against the site have been temporarily disrupted.

I’ve wondered since this molasses started if we weren’t being hit by some kind of half-assed DOS attack.

UPDATE:

https://www.dynstatus.com

Event cause:

On Friday October 21, 2016 at approximately 11:10 UTC, Dyn came under attack by a large Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against our Managed DNS infrastructure in the US-East region. Customers affected may have seen regional resolution failures in US-East and intermittent spikes in latency globally. Dyn’s engineers were able to successfully mitigate the attack at approximately 13:20 UTC, and shortly after, the attack subsided.

At roughly 15:50 UTC a second DDoS attack began against the Managed DNS platform. This attack was distributed in a more global fashion. Affected customers may have seen intermittent resolution issues as well as increased global latency. At approximately 17:00 UTC, our engineers were again able to mitigate the attack and service was restored.

At Dyn, we take every incident seriously and work hard to ensure we deliver the service our customers have come to expect. We will continue to evaluate every situation with the goal of improving our systems and processes to deliver the utmost customer experience. Thank you for your continued support.

‘This is a test of the Internet Kill Switch. They are preparing for the coup.’

In so many words, you might be right.

If we had a sane congress they would demand Obama’s resignation. There is no way anyone trusts him during a crisis.

There are some saying that Wiki has been taken over by a government agency. People who are familiar with the writing that normally appears on Wiki are saying it has changed.

Unsure. Would not surprise me if something happened at their leader.

Even more important than ICANN is our technical weakness. China has foolproof encryption. People might say that’s impossible, but quantum encryption is mind-boggling.

And I would not be surprised if Putin is also better prepared than us.

Or it could be that a sleeper cell of wikileaks had to take over and do things a little differently?

I have thought about that too. And the possibility that all traffic in and out of this site is running through a 3rd hidden server(in the middle) run by someone like the NSA. That would cause a major delay.

Freerepublic.com is 209.157.64.200

On my toolbar (Firefox) where you can edit and make comments I put that in there. I urge all FReepers to do that or something similar.
