Although there's a tendency to appreciate the fact that Ecuador is housing Assange, the fact is that the leftist Ecuadorian government loves to poke the US in the eye at every opportunity, and putting him up in their embassy was a sign of that.

Ecuador is a poverty-stricken country, it receive about $25 million or more in US foreign aid every 365 days. Plus the US sent more big bucks in relief money to the country after its earthquake in the northern part of the country this past year.
