Dennis Byrd, a former New York Jets defensive end whose career was cut short in 1992 due to a broken neck, was killed in a head-on vehicle collision Saturday near his home in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed to ESPN.
Byrd, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene due to massive injuries.
The highway patrol said the crash happened about 11:15 a.m. between Oologah and Claremore.
Byrd, who was driving a 2004 Hummer H2, was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound on Oklahoma Highway 88 and veered into his lane. The other car, a 2000 Ford Explorer, was driven by a 17-year-old Claremore youth.
Gosh, what a shame. There’s a name I hadn’t heard in a long time.
Right by my brothers home...
Sad
I know pretty much exactly where that is. We used to camp at Hawthorne Bluff campground near Oolagah. My Daughter and her family still do.
Will Rogers was born near Oolagah tho he claimed Claremore as his home town.
Other car driven by a 17 year old.Yikes....kids that age are dramatically inexperienced and all too many of them are stupid as well.Sounds like this man was a good Christian.Sad indeed.
Rest in Peace.
May God’s Holy Angels escort him to Paradise.
In paradisuum deducant te Angeli;in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem.
Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem.
RIP.
Saddened;
And thanks for relating your experience.
Sad news. May he RIP.
I had recalled that he was a believer. Satan is always trying to kill believers. I have cars veer into my lane on a near weekly basis in LA.
Satan is trying to kill you on the highway?
I’m so sorry to hear this. Prayers for Byrd’s family and friends...and for the kid who hit him; he’s going to need them, as well.
Thanks for posting.
