New Jerseys low gas prices are about to get more expensive after Republican Gov. Chris Christie on Friday signed legislation raising the gas tax by 23 cents per gallon, from the 49th highest in the nation to the sixth, to pay for an expired transportation trust fund.
The gas tax, though, is still lower than the gas tax in neighboring New York and Pennsylvania. The hike is set to go into effect Nov. 1.
Christie also rescinded an order that shut down transportation projects in the state. He first issued the order when the transportation trust fund expired months ago.
The legislation signed by Christie raises the gas tax from 14.5 cents per gallon to 37.5 cents per gallon while cutting the sales and estate taxes. It also offers tax credits to veterans and for poorer residents.

Christie you big fat liberal.
I lived in NY right near the NJ border. Everybody lived there would fuel up in NJ. There are gas stations on the Palisades Parkway, both directions, right off the George Washington Bridge which are busy 24/365 as NYers heading from or to NY fuel up.
And I bet you still can’t pump it yourself.
Jersey girls don’t pump gas. I wouldn’t know what to do, I’ve never paid attention.
Many people travel through NJ so they can get cheap gas, including myself. This trade will now dry up and the gas taxes collected will fall short of expectations. Not that it matters to a liberal, as long as taxes go up they are happy, like a pig in sh*t.
Great legacy you got there, Christie. Remind anyone why they should vote republican ever again? The idiot former PA governor did the same thing here. It’s all anyone will remember about him. Stupid stupid stupid!
Nope. Still mandatory full serve. And the wait at the pump gets longer every year.
This was released to turn jersey voters against Trump.
Well, as compensation the taxes in New Jersey are probably so low
that the residents will barely notice this one. :<{
Curious though, that the GOPeunuch Governor signs this in three weeks
prior to election day. Does he think it will hurt Rat state legisliars?
I asked the gas station attendant last time if he knew that the increase was coming. He said he didn’t think it would happen. I said he would lose my business and thousands of people passing through NJ. He didn’t think it would happen. As Trump would ask: how stupid are we?
You folks there elected this boob, twice.
Christie is the best we could hope for in a governor here in the northeast; he held out on this until other taxes would be cut (a position he consistently held), but he knows that the roads and bridges are literally falling apart. I’m not happy with the increase, but I’m not happy re-aligning my wheels every few months either. The problem became impossible to ignore as more and more major roadways were seeing traffic issues due to emergency repairs (basically patches). He also had to deal with the flight of wealth from the state that was mirroring the flight of companies and jobs; the state is descending into a morass of Welfarians and imported foreigners filling the void left by people that matter (taxpayers/makers).
In any case, it removed one of the last remaining good things about NJ (our gasoline taxes had been among the lowest in the country) and will just push up the cost of living here even more.
Wife’s family is from the Teaneck area.
They know high taxes.
I have to believe that a whole passel of folks from New York etc would go over the border to fuel up making loads for N.J., that is going to stop which means lots of convenience stores will not sell so much beer.
Oh, this will definitely be felt along the border in terms of NY and PA. On the other hand, Jerseyans may start using those places, which we avoided because they were more expensive than those further in (they competed with NY/PA prices instead of NJ prices).
Thing is, you watch, those tax breaks that are part of the deal will not be enforced.
