Hurricane Matthew
NOAA/NHC ^ | 1 October 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/01/2016 7:00:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, and we await the long anticipated sharp turn northward. Jamaica is completing final storm preparations. All interests in the Eastern U.S. and Bahamas should be carefully watching the track of Mighty Matthew.

Ripped straight from the NHC Discussion page:

Matthew remains south of a low-to mid-level ridge over
the western Atlantic. The dynamical models forecast this ridge to
weaken over the next 72 hours as a mid- to upper-level trough develops
over the Gulf of Mexico. This evolution should cause Matthew to turn
northwestward after 24 hours and northward by 48-72 hours. The guidance
generally agrees with this scenario. However, there is a spread between
the GFS forecast of landfall in Jamaica and eastern Cuba and the ECMWF
forecast landfall in southwestern Haiti. The guidance becomes more
divergent after 72 hours.

Seas might be a bit rough to start, but right now, neither Matthew nor Nicole will be a threat to Bermuda.

“The Norweigan Breakaway is leaving Bermuda on Friday for NYC? I wonder why Norweigan would allow this trip?”

Do they hope the ship will be sunk to get the insurance money?(sarcastic snigger!)

Is there a politically incorrect personage on the ship somebody wants disappeared?(ala fight 800?)

Make the debate Sunday contingent on terrible hurricane damage.

No time for a show when there are lives at risk.

The ship will be in the Carolina’s on Saturday. I wonder if they expect to be behind Matthew?

At this point, I have heard we have a 50/50 chance of TS strength winds in Tampa Bay. With this storm, anything is possible.

fyi--my mother is en route this afternoon. Her husband is playing the role of 87 year old cowboy, riding out the storm at home, two blocks from the ICW on the St. Lucie River. Bah. The police just visited to announce mandatory evacuations. They took his name and info when he refused to leave.

She’s taking him in a sherpa bag into the cabin with her.

That definitely sounds like a cozy ride!

Marvelous... is it too late to get an insurance policy on him? That’s stupid. His house could seriously be covered with water.

I hope so! Poor little guy. This is the best way for him to get here, though.

Yeah same here in the fishing business you better know something about the weather or get in trouble on a regular basis.

Why I moved from Jupiter,Florida in 2006. Looks like the latest models at 2pm have the storm within 50 miles of the coast and at my daughter’s house in Palm Beach Gardens they are talking hurricane force winds, rain, local flooding for 12 hours starting early Friday morning. Lived through a dozen hurricanes including David in 1979 and the toxic twins of Frances and Jeanne in 2004 and had to endure 2 weeks without power, replaced a roof and cleaning up downed trees.

No, unfortunately. I don’t usually hope for snow these days, but we could use some this winter to help us past this drought.

The storm itself was less intense compared to what Florida usually gets but the damage along a heavily populated and very unprepared NY and NJ coastline was horrific because of the storm surge.

The lower end of my hometown had 12 FEET of storm surgewater over it and its only a few feet above sea level. Thousands of homes were uninhabitable for months and months. It was cold since it hit in the fall so you couldn’t just camp out.
My parents street 3 miles north of that was out of power for 2 weeks. Every large tree in the town was GONE.

Hardly something to sneer at.

It's not your first rodeo, but I wish you well.

Regards to weather, up north we are indoors for a few months when it's too cold outside. The same idea in the south - locals just stay indoors when it's just too hot outside few a few months. I'd take the heat over the cold any day.

Good to go!

Getting any weather yet?

Does an offshore storm like this help to catch fish? Stirs up the bait fish or something like that?

So they are suggesting 4 feet of surge or less for most of the impacted areas. I hope that’s right, but color me skeptical.
