Hurricane Matthew
NOAA/NHC ^ | 1 October 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/01/2016 7:00:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, and we await the long anticipated sharp turn northward. Jamaica is completing final storm preparations. All interests in the Eastern U.S. and Bahamas should be carefully watching the track of Mighty Matthew.

Ripped straight from the NHC Discussion page:

Matthew remains south of a low-to mid-level ridge over
the western Atlantic. The dynamical models forecast this ridge to
weaken over the next 72 hours as a mid- to upper-level trough develops
over the Gulf of Mexico. This evolution should cause Matthew to turn
northwestward after 24 hours and northward by 48-72 hours. The guidance
generally agrees with this scenario. However, there is a spread between
the GFS forecast of landfall in Jamaica and eastern Cuba and the ECMWF
forecast landfall in southwestern Haiti. The guidance becomes more
divergent after 72 hours.

I’m not far from Cocoa Beach.......
......We had a hurricane stall off our coast in ‘79
only a Cat 1

I truly wished we had evacuated when the power of this off shore Cat 1 hit.
It spawned tornadoes, high winds, broken power lines, torn roofs, etc

Jamacia will be on the clean side of the storm haiti will not they will get hammered. Thanks to the clinton foundation they will have no money or any infrastructure to withstand the storm since the clinton’s stole all their money.

IIRC Camille was a very compact storm. The satellite imagery back then wasn't as good as it is today, but I seem to recall it didn't have the areal extent that this storm has. Matt seems to be a widely dispersed hurricane.

Similarly, Andrew was a small but ferocious storm. I guess winding all that energy up in a small package really causes problems.

Stalled storms are the worst! (especially nighttime howlers)

Even the best construction shows wear and tear from constant beating by prolonged winds, projectiles and horizontal rain. The flooding from stalled storms is devastating. The best hope for Haiti would be if Matthew picks up forward speed.

"But it is only a weak tropical storm," said by a yahoo from Kansas...

Could get a bit breezy here over the next couple of days. I’ll know Wednesday. Business trip to West Palm.

of 15 to 25 inches across southern Haiti...

When I was a little girl, I was fascinated by the church without a steeple on East Broad in Richmond. It was damaged during Hazel and removed in 1955, although my grandfather always said Hazel blew it off. :-)

My mind remembers the steeple laying on the ground next to the church, but honestly, I am not sure if that is a real memory or my mind playing tricks.

I do know every time we passed it, I would get excited. “There's the church without a steeple!” Didn't take much to entertain me, LOL!

Hazel was devastating. It came in to Durham. No power for a long time.

I grew up in west Texas and remember seeing tv reports about Camille and thinking to myself “I will never live in a place where hurricanes can go.”

Here I sit in Florida many years after riding out Hugo in SC. rofl

Never say never.....

It’s hard to compare them because they are dependent on the current weather situation.

They probably have a studio set up to look like an out-of-doors street corner complete with a stop sign bending 90 degrees.

Glad you added “machine” to your description . . . with Ms.Shepherd there is no end of imagination.

Other than similar strength and geographic forecast track, there is really no similarity at all.
