IIRC Camille was a very compact storm. The satellite imagery back then wasn't as good as it is today, but I seem to recall it didn't have the areal extent that this storm has. Matt seems to be a widely dispersed hurricane.

Similarly, Andrew was a small but ferocious storm. I guess winding all that energy up in a small package really causes problems.

I grew up in west Texas and remember seeing tv reports about Camille and thinking to myself “I will never live in a place where hurricanes can go.”

Here I sit in Florida many years after riding out Hugo in SC. rofl

Never say never.....

I guess winding all that energy up in a small package really causes problems.

People tend to get very impressed by sprawling storms, but they do tend to be more disorganized and less intense than the compact, tightly wrapped storms with a very well-defined eye.
