As the killer stood before him, Judge Kenneth Walker couldn't stay silent.
"If I could I would take all the guns in America, put them on big barges and go dump them in the ocean," the judge told the defendant. "Nobody would have a gun. Not police, not security, not anybody. We should eliminate all of them. We could save 33,000 people a year if we didn't have guns in this country."
Marcell Lee Daniel Jr. had unleashed 30 bullets during an afternoon drive-by shooting of an innocent man on a North Portland sidewalk. The man, Andrew Coggins Jr., 24, died.
The judge kept going.
"Australia after a major shooting rounded up all the guns, and they haven't had near the death that we do here in this country," he said.
"I just saw last night a statistic that 11,000 people in America are murdered each year and another 20,000 commit suicide with guns," Walker said, referring to figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"They are a scourge of this country and no one should have one as far as I'm concerned," he said. "There's no defense to guns. There's just absolutely no reason to have them. But it is a right of people in this country to own and possess them, and I will not say anything to affect that right."
Walker, a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge for nearly 10 years and a criminal defense attorney before that for 25 years, sentenced Daniel to 17 1/2 years in prison.

Just think how swell it would be if we got rid of the guns AND those awful, polluting cars.
Everybody can just buy a wagon and a team of unicorns and travel around like we did 200 years ago.
The Judge needs to preach his message...in the Hood...loudly on a street-corner...at midnight.
We wouldn’t anyone to miss it... ;-)
And this utter moron is a judge - God help America.
The turd in the white hut is even worse, and there are approximately half of the people in the USA contemplating voting for a POS who will double down on the turd's stupidity.
Funny thing, I was thinking we should put all judges on a barge and sink them at sea!
20,000 people who wish to commit suicide will do so with a gun or not, so there goes 2/3 of your “lives saved down the tubes.
So this idiot judge assumes all of those who commit suicide with a gun (which is how you get to the 30,000+ number) would not find some other means to do the deed?
All liberal judges should be dumped into a shallow pit.
Against guns but sentences a man who killed someone in cold blood to only 17 1/2 years. I'd say this judge is part of the problem
“Marcell Lee Daniel Jr. had unleashed 30 bullets during an afternoon drive-by shooting of an innocent man on a North Portland sidewalk. The man, Andrew Coggins Jr., 24, died. . . . Walker, a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge for nearly 10 years and a criminal defense attorney before that for 25 years, sentenced Daniel to 17 1/2 years in prison.”
Daniel shoots Coggins 30 times. Coggins dies. Daniel is sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison. Liberal judge who presided over the case and sentenced Daniel condemns guns.
How about sentencing Daniel to death for first degree murder? How about establishing an appeals process that requires no more than one year in capital cases? How about actually executing the criminal once the appeals process is over? Perhaps if these criminals knew they would face swift justice and quickly receive punishment commensurate with their crimes they would hesitate to commit heinous crimes.
Something is wrong with the legal system when a cold blooded murderer receives on 17 1/2 years. The problem is those administering the system.
Ponder this, "your Honor": guns don't go off by themselves. Maybe you should focus more on the person that pulled the trigger.
I completely agree with him.
I also would like to refer to my house as “the ocean” from now on.
And then move on to baseball bats, rocks, bricks, and other “objects”.
Might as well mandate amputation of everybody’s hands by age 2 to “save lives”.
This “judge” is an idiot.
Yep. I’m surprised it took everyone that long to pick up on it.
So this idiot judge sentences the perp to 17.5 years instead of life without parole or a death sentence because the problem is the gun, not the perp.
If I could I would take all the knives in America, put them on big barges and go dump them in the ocean
If I could I would take all the sharp pointy things in America, put them on big barges and go dump them in the ocean
If I could I would take all the hands in America, put them on big barges and go dump them in the ocean
If I could I would take all the mean people in America, put them on big barges and go dump them in the ocean
If I could I would take all everyone I don't like in America, put them on big barges and go dump them in the ocean
If I could I would, but damn, they have guns, so I can't

The judge left out a few more murderous weapons in his self righteous diatribe. He left out knives that account for 3 times more deaths tan guns. e left out alcohol and drug addiction accounting for 10 times more death than guns.
Most importantly he left out hands, yes, bare hands. The human body is the most lethal weapon of all resulting in 100 times more death than guns, knives and drugs combined.
The judge needs to get his ire up about humans and he would be wise to start with himself. Judges are the primary cause of incarceration with those most likely to create murder and mayhem.
Institutions of criminality, prisons, are the most insidious cause of crime. It is judges who decide to subject those who come before them to be trained in these hell holes. Judges are the major source of all forms of crime.
You should support dumping all judges in the ocean, judge.
Says the liar, after having gone on a rant against anybody owning guns.
You're right. He does understand the Constitution ... and rejects it.
Don't worry, they are working on that one. Self-driving cars that only go where "they" want you to go? A tyrant's wet dream.
