Editorial: More blood in the news cries out for saner gun laws
Chicago S-T ^ | 28 sept 2016

Three important news stories this week, taken together, cry out for saner gun laws in Illinois — beginning with tougher penalties for gun crimes.

In the first story, a man charged with shooting and killing another man near Millennium Park on Saturday was reported to have a criminal record that should have precluded him from even being on the street. The suspect, Paul Pagan, 32 had been arrested 39 times and was twice convicted for pointing a gun during an argument. He has convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless conduct, marijuana possession and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He had a warrant out for his arrest. Yet he was back on the street, allegedly with a gun.

In the second story, the FBI reported on Monday that violent crime in the U.S. was up 4 percent last year and that murder was up 12.8 percent in cities. Violent crime is a Chicago crisis, but we are not alone.

39 arrests, two convictions, and he’s on the street with a gun, in a city that already has strict gun laws? That’s because of the second amendment? Really?

Bad role model for guns. You can’t fix it when the muffin is done.

Given the headline, I am not quite sure there is a connection? Is this an Onion satire piece?

How’s this: Felons on parole are required to carry with them, at all times, an RFID card that will identify them to police, at a distance, as a paroled felon. As a condition of parole, they must accept being stopped and searched by police at any time. Being caught without the the RFID card revokes their parole.

For twenty years Chicago did not allow any guns or gun stores. And during that time it was the murder capital of the country. And virtually all the murders where in a few neighborhoods on the South and West side where city housing projects existed. While the projects stood, the police lost control of the area and never entered the projects except in forces of 10 police or more.

Chicago wants the guns gone. But they don’t want to do anything to get rid of them. They don’t put people in jail for having a gun, waving a gun, shooting a gun. And that is why the people don’t tell the police who has a gun. Because they know those people will be on the street in a short time. And they will be mad and of course they will have a gun.

I would think that putting more guns on the street would make better sense, I mean - isn’t that what the liberals are telling us concerning muslums immigration? Bringing in more muslums does not equate into a higher risk of spontaneous jihad, so they tell us. It actually is a good thing - so they tell us. So, more guns would actually be a good thing using that way of thinking. See, we can agree with liberals about some (1) things - more guns = safer.

Curious. Chicagoans are coming to the realization that putting thugs in prison increases their safety. Meanwhile, Hillary says blacks are subjected to sentences that are too long. Hmmm... Is Chicago going Conservative? Is the well crafted Rat machine disintegrating?

YES! And making it harder for the rest of us to exercise our second amendment right is going to help this how? I'm not sure how the author of the bit of fecal smearing reached that conclusion - oh wait I do know. He read it from the Democrat bible otherwise know as their political platform, and where it says gun control is good and the freedom to defend yourself is bad

Does it really show that “saner” gun laws are needed or does it show that,in Chicago at least, fewer young punk psychopaths are needed?

More thug rioting calls out for saner speech laws.

Wonder how the editorial writer would like that.

I knew that people on parole had to consent to being searched as a condition of parole but I didn't know about this chip business.Gonna have to do some research on this.

"Yet he was back on the street, allegedly with a gun."

A criminal with an "alleged" gun is an argument for more gun laws?

“saner gun laws” to me, would mean that lawful Chicagoans would have an easier time carrying hand guns, for protection. Now all we have are “insane gun laws” that prevent lawful carry and only allow the criminal element to carry.

I agree with the title.

They need to make it eadier for people to legally carry. An armed society is a polite society.

Actually, the statistics support your theory quite well.

... because tougher gun laws will put people arrested 39 times in jail.

Shaking my dam head.

Guilliani’s approach seemed to work quite well in NY, perhaps we need to initiate that for a while, then check the outcome.
