2016 election Donald Trump expectations first presidential debate Hillary Clinton Lester Holt polls presidential | “Trump was in control and dominated the moderator, his opponent and the debate,” said CHQ Chairman Richard A. Viguerie in a post-debate interview with NewsMax’s John Gizzi.
“For those voters who want to change our country's leadership Trump helped them feel that he was an acceptable alternative. Trump tonight did what Reagan did in 1980 for those undecided voters --he showed he Trump Clinton debatewas an acceptable alternative,” observed Viguerie.
And post-debate polling appears to back-up Mr. Viguerie’s observations.
According to a Breitbart/Gravis “flash poll” conducted minutes after the debate ended, two percent of voters, previously undecided, switched to Trump after the debate. No undecideds went to Clinton. One percent switched from Trump to Clinton, and one percent switched from Clinton to Trump.
“Trump won on the most critical factor, on whether Clinton or Trump was more ‘plausible’ as president, 46 percent to her 42 percent,” said Democratic pollster Pat Caddell in analyzing the poll results.
“That for him is really what this debate was really about,” said Caddell.
And on key questions Trump also came out ahead in surprising ways.
On the question “Who showed that they care about people like you?” Trump won that 49 percent to 44 percent for her,” Caddell said.
In other questions, 49 percent said Trump was more honest and 42 percent said Clinton was more honest.
Forty-eight percent of respondents said in the debate Trump showed he would be a strong leader, compared with 44 percent for Clinton.
“As someone who's been a national marketer for over fifty years I think Donald Trump may be America's best marketer/communicator,” said Viguerie. “He's in a class by himself.”
“Trump far exceeded expectations and connected with center and right of center voters,” concluded Mr. Viguerie.
Voters switching to Trump after the debate is a clear indication of a Trump victory. He was in his first ever one-on-one debate last night, and Clinton in her 40th.
Trump won in so many ways, but viewers switching to Trump over Clinton say that Trump took care of the most important business: He had people accepting him as president.
To win the debate, Trump had to show he wasn’t Hitler. Hillary had to show she wasn’t Hillary.

That is, he doesn’t have to wow them. He merely has to show them that he’s not batsh** crazy.
I think he gave a lot of them an excuse to vote for him last night. Or at the very least, feel more comfortable not voting for Hillary, due to less fear of trump winning. He may have really helped out the third party candidates in that way. ;-)

It’s a sign that he was accepted last night.
He won.
I think we were all looking for the knockout punch, but I think the general public saw that on 9/11. What they were looking for at this point was to determine whether or not Donald Trump is “presidential”. Trump took Hillary to the woodshed on economics and America First during the first half hour. After that the moderator and Hillary tried to tag team him on a bunch of stuff that is really not relevant to regular people’s lives (the birth certificate, whether or not Trump thought some women were fat and unattractive (let’s face it, some women are - and a lot of men are too), whether or not Trump paid his “fair share” in taxes.
On the issues that are really important in this election (National Security, unfair trade agreements, loss of manufacturing and service jobs to outsourcing and importing of H1B job stealers, infrastructure, the military) Donald wiped the floor with her.
If you turned off the debate after the first hour (I was really tempted to do that myself) then Trump was magnificent and hillary was completely unmatched. But after they tag teamed Trump with stuff nobody really cares about, Trump came off looking a bit frazzled. On the issues that count, Trump won hands down. On the issues that nobody cares about, Clinton had the upper hand assisted by Lester Holt (who apparently got his questions from the Clinton campaign headquarters).
So when you clear out all the fog, Trump was clearly the winner.
Let’s see how the polls react.

Except on the Iraq war. I've had time to think about Trump's defense of his Iraq position. Even though it was the exact opposite of where I was at the time, I think he is right to defend the truth about himself. Many are taking him to task for spending all that time specifically showing Holt and Clinton to be wrong.
First, it proves they were wrong.
Second, it makes Trump the balanced candidate in comparison to Trump.
Third, it makes Clinton the warmonger given her wars in Libya, Egypt, Syria, her vote for the Iraq invasion, her support for confronting Putin, and her absolutely horrendous work arming ISIS and al Qaeda.
She is PROVABLY now the one most likely to get us into war.
