I watched last night's debate on mute. Here's who won

"You shut your mouth when you're talking to me." So goes the line from the classic American film "Wedding Crashers." A line that I took to heart as I watched a good chunk of Monday night's presidential debate on mute.

Why? Not because I couldn't bear to hear what the candidates said. Instead, I wanted to analyze the nonverbals (which go a long way to determining likability) without distraction. Yes, optics matter.

Exactly what I thought when she walked in.

Ah - I’m an idiot, the author is a woman. That makes a lot of sense given what I heard. Mea culpa.

Given her Depends issues, you can bet a 90 minute session gave her a lot of concerns about “trickle down”.

Most of us were hoping for a deluge.

I agree with you, but in political/corporate world, red is a power color. Back in the 70’s when women were entering previously male bastions, they were advised to wear power colors and imitate men’s pinstripes. They were also advised to speak in deep, authoritative tones.

Hillary telegraphed importance of color before the debate by “joking” on the “Between the Ferns” comedy segment, “I assume he’ll wear that red power tie.” Of course he did not.

She probably thought she outsmarted him on the optics, but Trump’s job was to not be a fear-inducing nuclear button pusher. Big advantage: Trump.

She’ll probably go back to angelic white for the next debate.

Two definitions:

: a raised platform for a speaker, performer, or the leader of an orchestra

: a stand with a slanted surface that holds a book, notes, etc., for someone who is reading, speaking, or teaching

Unbelievable. it is gone!

The unadulterated, sniveling, light weights. Can’t deal with the truth, even when it comes into them from their own viewers.

Trump did shake Lester Holt’s hand... it was several seconds after Hillary did. It seemed like a very cordial ‘shake’. Trump was smiling broadly.

At one point my head was spinning with all these numbers she was throwing out. No one would have a chance to process it all but it sounded like she was smart to memorize some numbers. Real or not.

I think people are generally sick of negative ads... I am especially sick of hers and she just continued them on the stage last night. Trump made his switch to being very presidential, and threw in the appropriate dig when it had to do with her record.

It seemed like the first question, Trump really tried to stay on point of the question itself, then Hillary went off in other directions and he tried to respond to her and the question... He hammered trade hard and I thought won the debate with the first question since Economy has to be #1 with Security being very close (way things are going might be #1 before November).

It just devolved from there, because he did not have time to both answer the questions and respond to Hillary’s little gotchas and personal attacks. Actually the Debate ended early when it turned into let’s get down in the mud... with the “Debate” question about him releasing his taxes... I fully expected it to come up, just should not have been a moderator “question”. It should have been left up to Hillary to work in like Trump did her emails in response.

The one miss I saw, was about the only time I ever heard him reference Hillary’s looks being when she was “Looking” tired (before the “pneumonia” was admitted to) I really wish he would have said that right before he went into the stamina thing... Yes we all know that was what he was talking about, but to those not following along as closely his effort may have appeared more of a switch from looks to stamina.

I was a little disappointed on how he handled the Iraq war issue, because as he said, he knew it would come up and it should have seemed a little smoother explanation... I already understood it about the same as he said, in that if you watch the Howard Stern interview, you could tell it was something off the cuff that he had not thought about much when he answered Howard (correctly by the way)... Just guessing he was like every American I knew that believed when we left Iraq the first time, that we would be going back... But I also remember the arguments Trump used to have with Hannity before we went into Iraq and Trump was staunchly against it. This is what made me think he had not changed his liberal thinking after registering Republican for his earlier presidential aspirations... For the record, I thought we should have gone back when Saddam was shooting at our planes daily, long before WMD’s were mentioned, It seems to me, like that was even before 9-11 happened I was saying that... but I was mad we left without finishing the first time. So that was a big negative on Trump I had to overcome with myself to support him now, I Never really looked into where the Stern Interview fits into the timeline. I do wonder now how much time elapsed before he changed his mind... after all he was just an every day citizen, a business man, his opinion did not involve risking peoples lives at the time, Like Hillary’s vote for it did... Its one of her few public stances I agreed with, before she said that vote was a mistake. Iraq was not a mistake until after Obama got elected... I just don’t believe Obama’s handling of it after the fact can be a factor in being right or wrong on going in the first place.

I’m not a huge McCain fan, but if he and Palin had won 8 years ago, I believe we as a country and probably the world would be in a different place today... Elections have consequences!

She’s clueless about how the economy works, clueless about foreign policy, and clueless about national defense. She’s a compulsive liar, corrupt politician, and is in it only for herself. She couldn’t care less about America as she has repeatedly demonstrated. I hope she is removed from all public capacity very soon.

Actually yes.

What do you have a problem with?

A deep understanding of such is an essential prerequisite of any informed citizen. Do you really think someone could possibly have useful insights into a debate who had not studied same? Could you even consider someone educated who couldn’t explain and defend a belief or position?

From what you seem to consider a ‘prig’, I have no problem being considered one.

Professional writers should use the English language flawlessly and with great accuracy.

Cry me a river. After the debate it was too late to call Lester out. He should have been ready for signs of partisanship and called it right away. People are ready for his message that the system is rigged, but he never delivered it. Trump never took charge of the situation as he should have done. Hillary and Lester drew him into the tall grass and he never got out. He choked.
