Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump ushered the 2016 presidential campaign into a new phase tonight, and they did it with plenty of barbs.

The two candidates faced off in their first general election debate at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York, in front of what was expected to be a historic number of television viewers.

4. Trump Asks ‘Why Not’ Blame All the World’s Problems on Clinton Less than 30 minutes into the debate, Trump went after Clinton, attacking her on trade, ISIS, taxes, the economy and more. Clinton quipped: "I have a feeling by the end of this evening I'm going to be blamed for everything that's ever happened.” Trump didn’t miss a beat, saying to his opponent: “Why not?”

Clinton responded: "Why not? Yeah. Why not? Just join the debate by saying more crazy things. Now, let me say this—“

Trump interjected: "There's nothing crazy about not letting our companies bring their money back into the country,” before the moderator reminded Trump, "This is secretary Clinton's two minutes, please."

I think Trump did as well as possible, given the hostile situation he was in.

I don't think the debate changed anyone's mind, which is OK. There is still time until election day. I think Trump did come across well overall, and so did Hillary -- they each kept their supporters,

It was a very biased debate against Trump.

Trump did what he needed to do.

Very good news for Trump.

I think he hit her pretty hard several times. I especially loved it when he referenced Solyndra in response to her solar panel comments.

It was a tie, which helps the one with momentum.

Trump, therefore, does great with a nice, polite tie. Liberals can’t say he’s “unhinged” any longer.

Me too. I wish he had expanded on that, since many people maybe are ignorant on it.

He did great for the first half but got flustered a bit at the end.

He made some great great hits though.

If he did, then minds were changed. Thing is, there are a LOT of people that are looking for an excuse to vote for trump but are afraid he is too “out there” to be trusted. If he can hold his own in a debate, for some of them, that will be the permission they need. His handling of Mexico gave me the permission I needed.

Who has said women don't deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men.”

This comment should not have gone unchallenged. If a woman can not do as good a job as man why should they get equal pay?

Trump has to keep flying around, pushing his energy to the very limit, appearing, shaking hands, joking around.

Crowds love him.

THAT is really where he has Hillary —NO WAY can she do that or even 10% of that

Great shot by Hillary after Trump pointed out Hillary had STAYED HOME, “I had the option of preparing for the Debate, Donald. And ya know what..? I DID...!”

See? She KNEW she had him there and that others would agree.

Just KEEP flying around, drawing YUGE crowds, Don:

THAT IS WORKING FOR YOU.

Biased? IN SPADES:

Moderator: Mrs. Clinton, tell us how it felt when your xyz policy fed starving children and cleaned up the environment.

Moderator: Mr. Trump, is it true you’ve stopped beating your wife?

That pretty much sums up the spirit of the questions

That is the single most important outcome of this debate. I think he picked up some Bernie supporters.

Folks, even the Leftist sites, Hillary is losing the polls, “Who won.”

She’s losing MSNBC, TIME, BING, and on it goes.

Out of about seven to eight sights, she was only winning on one poll. CNBC

That is a very damning showing.

Nobody gives a rats ass about this woman.

She’s going down big-time.

Trump didn’t lost tonight, and this was the best she is going to do.

Trump will nail her next time.

She won’t do better than this in the other debates.

She was talking about “being a RELIABLE President”:

“Our SEALS fought for 13 hours in Benghazi, Mrs. Secretary, BEGGING on the radio as they died...were you reliable FOR THEM...?”

Alas, it was not to be.

I thought a perfect comeback when Clinton said he’d called women “slobs, pigs and dogs” if he had interjected, “not just women!”

Why not? Truth has never been a value of the liberals.

Heheheh. I think it will come up. I noticed it when she said it. It'll be chalked up to a "mis-speak" on her part, but it was a massive mistake. She said women deserve the same pay for less work.

I think his approach was to let Hillary hit him with all her arrows, then counter them. It seems most of the anti Trump propaganda was used. He effectively countered each one. She has no ammo now for the next debate.

Did you consult the Oxford English Dictionary in order to prove that you are an anachronism?
