To add - what kills buildings there -
- Extreme humidity grows mold, rusts rebar and cracks concrete.
- Waterlogged soil cracks concrete pads, shifts foundations.
- Anay (super-termites) are hell on anything wooden and even chew through adobe (light volcanic rock).

Typhoons on Luzon at least (less frequent down south) can be expected 5-10 times a year - thats like having 5-10 hurricanes through Florida every year. The peak year as per Wiki was 1993 - 19 typhoons passed through the Philippines that year.

Message from friend in Davao City. She and her son were still in bed. Her son slept though it. She says it shook for a long time.

Rock eating termites... that has got to be a nightmare.

Got this in Mail from Mark17 in Davao City:

We are ok folks

From Mark17 | 09/23/2016 5:10:08 PM PDT replied I was sitting here watching TV 📺 a few minutes before 7 AM, when the house began to sway. It lasted about 15 seconds. Even my dog 🐶 looked around. Nothing went off. The electricity, and water still worked fine, but we really felt it. I figured I would see it on the internet real fast. It was, I think, a 6.3 quake, centered in Mati, about 50 miles to the east of Davao City. I have a feeling there might be major damage in Mati, but don’t know yet. One of my wife’s friends went to Mati yesterday, so we hope she is ok too. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Hmm. One of my co-workers went home to the Philippines to visit her mother who is quite ill. She flew there last Monday. I am not sure what part of the Philippines she’s in. I expect I’ll hear about it tomorrow from her friends.

Assuming that WVKayaker’s Marlene is ok. Bless her heart - she must be missing him so much.

I think I felt the shaking for about 20 seconds. I was already awake, getting ready to watch a live major league game. My wife was asleep, but it woke her up. Even my dog popped her head up, wondering what was going on. I experienced the 1989 California quake. That one was much worse. I am glad to be out of California. Everything seems ok. Satellite TV, electricity, water, cell phones and internet are all working properly. 😃😀😆😄😂😇😎😊

Yes, Marlene is ok. She is sitting outside my house right now, mooching off my WiFi. 😂 She smiled and said, there was no earthquake. 😆 I just said, yeah, right. 😎🇵🇭
