Cruz supporters alarmed by possible Trump endorsement
Washington Examiner ^ | September 22, 2016 | By DAVID M. DRUCKER

Ted Cruz supporters were alarmed Wednesday at suggestions that he was on the verge of endorsing Donald Trump.

They worry that the Texas senator could squander his brand as a fighter — and goodwill earned among many through his stubborn refusal to back his party's nominee — if he caves with nothing to show for it.

Cruz has held out on the grounds that Trump is insufficiently conservative, and because Trump attacked his wife and father down the stretch of their heated battle for the Republican nomination.

The senator even took the extraordinary step of declining to endorse Trump during a televised, prime time speech delivered from the stage of the New York businessman's own nominating convention.

I’m a Cruz guy, and I invite him to join those of us who think it’s important that Trump wins.

There may be some Trump outreach going on behind the scenes, which would prove Trump is the more magnanimous person at this point, but also sets up a scene for Cruz to grow again.

To keep fissures around unnecessarily, even after we’ve been stabbed, is to leave something that the devil can exploit. It’s stupid all around.

“They worry that the Texas senator could squander his brand as a fighter”

Jim, that’s the post of the day! Cruz is long past having anything left to “squander.” I just hope the good people of Texas do not return him to the US Senate, because I am of the opinion that he will use every device available to him to undermine President Trump. And he will do that simply to advance his own sorry political career or what’s left of it.

Cruz can endorse Trump but he’ll always be suspect.

He’s got no brand left... I think he realizes that he put himself in a position where even re-election in TX may be difficult for him.

They’re still lurking and signing up as retreads.

The skunk is redeemable? If Cruz comes crawling back, encourage him, then when he gets close enough kick him in the head. That's what Trump is gonna do.

I don't think he will. I think Trump will act like an adult, and welcome any support.

One can only hope. As for John Kasich, in Ohio: "Embarrassment."

He was selling himself as one having great empathy for other people's problems. But he has rendered himself a very, very sorry joke, by not seeing what a Hillary victory would actually mean for the future of rooted Ohioans. It would be an absolute catastrophe.

While I hope he does it and soon, at this point does his endorsement really help Trump out in November?

You can be sure that Cruz knows his endorsement now would do nothing to boost Trump’s numbers, which is why he might just do it now. In this way, he makes good on his campaign pledge to support the GOP nominee for President, but too late to make any difference.

The word that really IS everything, is the word that God speaks. Everything else can either be in accord with it, or attempt vainly to fight it.

People can break promises. People will break promises. The ability to keep promises depends on circumstance that we cannot completely understand or control.

A promise not kept was not of God. It was a sin. It is not the unforgivable sin, which is to refuse the promise of God unto salvation until it is too late.

Drawing nearer to God will have the side effect of better reliability.

As the bible itself says, the man who said “I will not go” and then goes, is better than the man who said “I will go” and then does not go.

I think if he gets on board and we get Mr. Trump in the White House, all could be forgotten,

It would certainly go a long way...and I think Cruz really ows Trump one now with Trump’s public support of the Protection of Internet Freedom Act, Cruz’s bill.

Boy genius boxed himself in on this one. He says Trump isn’t a conservative and can’t vote for him and his supporters all scream yeah he is standing on principle! But he gave his word to support the GOP nominee and isn’t so his word is worth nothing.

Right now if he endorses Trump he looks like Johnny come lately, let me on the bandwagon typical politician waiting to see how the wind is blowing. And it magnifies his horses arse like speech at the convention.

If he really does care about the country more than himself he should come out and say I fully endorse Trump, the country cannot take four years of Hillary, I am putting country above politics. My money says he won’t endorse unless it eventually looks like a Trump wave.

“They worry that the Texas senator could squander his brand as a fighter — and goodwill earned among many through his stubborn refusal to back his party’s nominee — if he caves with nothing to show for it.”

Are these people really this delusional? Trump has over 80% of his party’s support and is winning (often by big margins) among independents. Take into account also that at least half the NeverTrumpers are the sort of very moderate, globalist, establishment Republicans who can’t stand Cruz either, and that leaves very scant actual support for Cruz in the future if he continues to stab his party in the back this election (which is simply unforgivable—it’s wrong to put hurt feelings above the good of the country like he has been doing). It’s too late and he’s alienated far too many for him to still have realistic presidential hopes (he couldn’t even get a quarter of the vote before his brand was damaged), but at least he could quell some of the resentment among conservatives over what he’s done and probably save his senate seat.

Reince let the people who broke their contracts with the RNC to support the nominee (while taking RNC information in return) know they were destroying their careers as Republicans. Kasich can simply switch to the Dems, but that would be ridiculous for Cruz. If Cruz is smart, he will see the light and stop his insane efforts to help Hillary Clinton, who stands for everything he claims he opposes.

What Erickson and others who say they cannot vote for Trump -- not endorse or even just support Trump -- but that they cannot vote for Trump are acknowledging the awful truth that in this election year they cannot -- they will not -- vote to support our Constitution.

And they have the gall to attempt to justify their failure to perform the most basic, the most important duty a conservative has -- a duty to defend our Constitution -- as being true to their "conservative principles".

Such people -- so consumed by their emotions (much like the Left lives their entire lives) -- have truly lost their ability to reason ... and time to recover is growing short.

Agreed.

There could be some Machiavellian reasons for not endorsing, that would be good for both Trump and Cruz in the long run, but I'd rather play it straight.
