The custom in the United States today is for Electoral College (EC) votes to be awarded state-by-state on a winner-take-all basis. A candidate who wins the popular vote in an individual state gets every one of its electoral votes.
Although we are accustomed to thinking this is the only way it can be done, the method of awarding electoral votes is a matter for each state to decide. For example, two states (Nebraska and Maine) award electoral college votes by congressional district rather than by statewide popular vote. There is no reason for every other state in the nation not to follow suit.
One look at an electoral map will tell you why the Democrats will never allow this.
No. It’s time (past time really) to abolish this anachronistic and undemocratic institution. It was created by men who wanted to make sure that the educated elites would have the final say over who would be president. Right now the only ordinary votes that matter in presidential elections are cast in around a half dozen states and those are the only ones candidates pay any attention to.
The left would lose it’s grip on the few population centers that control election results. I cannot imagine LA county, Kern county and Imperial county in kalifornia, having an equal electorial voice to the libs. They would lose their monopoly.
Be careful what you wish for. Our conservative policies can change the problematic population centers and earn the trust of those residents.
Yeah, and we can elect a Governor for each District...
LOL! at the idiots who want to do away with States.
From 20 years ago, mathematical proof of the merits of the Electoral College:

“There is no reason for every other state in the nation not to follow suit.”
No reason except for the states choosing the method their electoral votes are calculated.
In addition, distributing electoral votes by congressional district would leave the process wide open for corrupt unfair Democratic gerrymandering.
I have argued for apportionment by congressional district for years, with the overall winner in the state receiving the other two votes that represent the senators.
Otherwise, my vote does not count diddly because I live in Md. Congressional apportionment more accurately represents the will of the people.
Even better, just get the states with big Dem cities to award based on congressional district, and leave the rest of the states alone :)
Thanks for posting that article (I was going to if someone else hadn’t yet). Surprising how few people — even Freepers — understand the mathematical implications of the Electoral College!!!
Short version: The Electoral College actually INCREASES every person’s “voting power,” defined as the probability that a single person’s vote can affect an election.
Note: Electors have almost NEVER voted against their constituents’ vote, and in the few cases they have, those were “protest” votes that did not affect the outcome.
Slightly longer version (mentioned in the article): Think of it like the World Series. In order to win, a team must win the most GAMES (analogize to states), not just rack up the most runs over the entire series (analogize to popular vote). Thus each game/state matters, not just the biggest one(s).
The math gets a little tricky, but it works.
For those who wish to change this to something far less effective there is a way to do so ... just amend the Constitution.
The Electoral College is a firewall containing vote fraud.
Without the Electoral College, all the excess votes in California will offset the votes in other states. Look at the map below of the results of the 2012 election.
See all those spikes in the cities? Without the Electoral College, those spikes will dwarf all the votes from everywhere else.

Right now, those margins stay in their respective states. Without the Electoral College, those margins count everywhere.

Or shop for a good judge.
“A Republic, if you can keep it.”
Love, Ben
If you award the EV’s by congressional district, it will be very hard for any Democrat to win! Sounds good to me!
“Had this system been in place in 2012 Romney would have won the election”
I’d rethink that selling point ..
no votes for the district of criminals. it is a federal enclave.
