The Electoral College is a firewall containing vote fraud.
Without the Electoral College, all the excess votes in California will offset the votes in other states. Look at the map below of the results of the 2012 election.
See all those spikes in the cities? Without the Electoral College, those spikes will dwarf all the votes from everywhere else.

That's a very good point. IMO the only Electoral College "reform" we need are these two:
1. Make the vote-casting automatic. No more "protest" votes.
2. If a state wants to change how its electors are apportioned, it is free to do so. But any change cannot take affect for at least one full year. No last-minute changes to favor one candidate over another.
One man one vote. That’s the only acceptable basis for a country that claims to be a democratically based constitutional republic. Where those votes are cast is immaterial. The Electoral College is just a form of election rigging.
Without the Electoral College, those spikes would be even higher.
