Fifty Trumpian days that will shake the world
The Financial Times ^ | September 18th, 2016 | Edward Luce

Posted on 09/18/2016 7:48:32 PM PDT by Mariner

The end is in sight. In 50 days we will know whether Donald Trump has pulled off the biggest upset in American history. It is a credit to the reality TV star’s populist skills that such an outcome is possible. Hillary Clinton is all that stands between the world and the Trumpian abyss.

It is a pity she has to pull this off while recovering from pneumonia. It is little short of astonishing that this close to midnight she feels obliged to launch another drive to explain to voters why she wants to be president. What exactly was the past year about? Or the past decade? As the song says, “If you don’t know me by now …”

It is safe to say that Mrs Clinton is not about to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Voters will have to make do with her campaign themes of building bridges rather than walls, and being stronger together. Laudable though such sentiments are, they are dangerously anodyne. They tell voters what Mrs Clinton is not — Donald Trump. They tell us next to nothing about what she would do.

Her success is thus predicated on Mr Trump’s indiscipline, which cannot always be relied upon (recent gaffes about disarming his opponent’s secret service detail notwithstanding). If he sticks to advice by “reaching out” to African-Americans, Hispanics and women he can take the edge off Mrs Clinton’s warnings. What then, would her campaign be left with?

The answer is worryingly vague. Next week Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump will face off in what will almost certainly be the most watched television debate in history. Mr Trump will start on low expectations. Mrs Clinton is an accomplished and well-prepared debater. That means Mr Trump’s bar for winning will be far lower.

If she manages to get through a debate without falling off her chair in a seizure, she will be proclaimed the winner. A couple of brain freezes and maybe a barking spell won’t alter that. If sh falls off her chair then MSM will start pushing as hard as they can for the sympathy vote. Let her have this honor before she dies. Give it to the little lady. etc.

Sweet!

Soon I expect to see a funeral announcement for someone:

“It is the opinion of the family that Hillary Clinton ordered the murder of the deceased.

Since the Just Us Department is covering up the crime please send contributions to the Trump campaign.”

“They are just laying groundwork for their falsely saying she won the debate.”

Well, that’s plausible reasoning, but it seems to me that it’s likely that Trump is going to crush her, and no amount of post-debate spin would convince those who watch that he didn’t.

I wonder if it’s possible the dumbass media actually believe Hillary’s gonna kick The Donald’s ass?

If she falls off the chair during the debate the MSM will be demanding the Democrats put someone else on the ticket to stop Trump.

They have run the focus groups, and they know the “sympathy vote” will not save Hillary against Trump.

It will be fun to watch the new Soviet media act in unison to try to erase all history and turn on a dime from “Hillary is fine” to “Hillary can’t serve, we need a new candidate.”

“Does this whole thing remind anybody else of “Rocky”?”

Was Apollo Creed a screechy old broken down harridan that reminded people of their mother in law? No, not Rocky.

You’ve got a SHORT memory. There were 16 candidates vying for republican spot.

Doesn’t matter—they don’t actually think that, other than that Hillary with the aid of the moderators could “out-wonkspeak” him. So they will try like anything to lower the bar for Hill before the debates.

I could see them trying to position it as if all she has to do is prove her health by withstanding the debates, and her superior credentials justify her election.

Still, underestimation is not a bad thing for Trump—it helped him in his primary battles.

It would be glorious if she gets dizzy and starts to fall and Trump quickly gets to her to break the fall and starts calling for medics....If it happens remember I predicted it LOL

.... (recent gaffes about disarming his opponent’s secret service detail notwithstanding).

To me, this is definitely not a gaffe. In fact it is something I would say, too. I think many, many others agree.

I believe Clinton and her cabal of idiots are going to be rolled over so hard on November 8 they will look like Rorschach inkblots.

Hillary is not telling the country what she wants to do as President.

Sure she is - per one ad she wants to install 500,000,000 solar panels during her first term as a way to "beat the other green superpowers and create lots of high paying jobs......too bad she doesn't explain the details, that would make it fun to hear.

Love the Midway reference. And so appropriate too! Election Day will be the Midway equivalent, when we finally check the enemy’s advance. Inauguration Day will signify the start of the Guadalcanal equivalent, when we start to take the offensive and begin rolling back the enemy’s gains.

Probably The New York Times editorial for Sept. 27th proclaiming that Hillary won the first debate has already been written.
