Candidates who don't back Trump may not be allowed to run again, RNC chairman says

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Sunday suggested he could say “never mind” to the “Never Trump” candidates should they try to make another run for the presidency.

Priebus said the former primary challengers who’ve refused to support Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump could face consequences if they fail to back Trump in the stretch-run to Election Day.

“Those people need to get on board,” Priebus told “Face the Nation.” “And if they’re thinking they’re going to run again some day, I think that we’re going to evaluate the process – of the nomination process and I don’t think it’s going to be that easy for them.”

Priebus didn’t specifically name the group, but Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are the most prominent ex-GOP primary candidates to refuse to support Trump.

Cruz and Bush were locked in particularly nasty verbal spats during the campaign with Trump, who termed his opponents “Lyin’ Ted” and “Low-Energy Jeb.” Though Kasich and Trump rarely went toe-to-toe, Kasich was the last Trump challenger to drop out of the race, and despite the Republican National Convention being held in Cleveland, the Ohio governor didn’t set foot in Quicken Loans Arena. Cruz spoke at the convention, but he was booed off the stage when he told the assembled, largely pro-Trump crowd to “vote your conscience.”

Surprisingly strong language for Preibus. Very surprising.

Lying Ted has no business in the RNC as a candidate for anything RNC related when he refuses to back the RNC and their presidential candidate.

These stragglers are lying @-holes.

Interesting. Sounds like a threat one can make only if Trump wins.

Well, Kasich and Bush are finished anyway. Cruz, who knows. He'll never be a national candidate again that's for sure. Senate maybe, or dogcatcher.

Kasich needs to get the message. He may switch to Demorat, but at least he should be told that his GOP days are over unless he pulls his head out of his ass and does his best for Trump here in Ohio.

The above made the choice to run against the base, at their own political peril.

As Jeb might say, adios.

I don’t think RP and the RNC have the authority to decide on candidates for House of Representatives, Senate, Governor, or whatever. Local voters can decide what they think about any candidates who are willing to meet state/local filing requirements.

Not so much - Priebus may not get the respect of some FReepert but he got mine after those meetings with Trump and the 180 he did to get the RNC lined-up and put an end to Romney and his nevertrump bulls#it. I don’t see how anyone could have asked for more from the RNC Chairman. Now he sees the potential Trump represents and wants to have a party to be the Chairman of...one that can Make America Great Again and build a foundation for political power for the next 20 years.

Prince Rebus is still Prince Rebus and always will be.

If Trump loses (he won’t) Rebus would be all over sucking up to the Bush and Romney faction.

What the heck has gotten into him? I would never have thought he’d be strong or forceful, particularly since he’s close to Paul Ryan.

Interesting.

Not at all. Trump will be the defacto head of the Republican party if he loses, too, just as Mittens was until now.

If you didn’t back Trump in 2016, you can be fairly certain that I won’t vote for you in the future.

"Surprisingly strong language for Preibus. Very surprising."

He knows Trump is most likely going to win. He wants to keep his job.
