Calcium Supplements Linked To Dementia Risk In Older Women
Health Day News ^ | 9-18-2016

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 17, 2016 (HealthDay News) — Taking calcium supplements with the hope of keeping osteoporosis at bay may raise an older woman's risk of dementia, a new study suggests.

And that seems particularly true if a woman has already sustained an event causing poor blood flow to the brain (cerebrovascular disease), such as from a stroke, researchers said.

The study can't prove cause-and-effect. However, dementia risk was seven times higher in female stroke survivors who took calcium supplements, compared to women with a history of stroke who didn't use the supplements, the findings showed.

The risk of dementia also was three times higher in women with white matter brain lesions who took calcium supplements, compared to women with white matter lesions who didn't take the supplements. Lesions in white matter tissue are evidence of a mini-stroke or some other problem impeding blood flow within the brain.

Because the study can't prove causality, "women with cerebrovascular disease and osteoporosis should discuss this new information with their clinicians," said lead researcher Dr. Silke Kern. She is a neuropsychiatric researcher at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Kern noted that some guidelines have recommended that seniors consume 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day to prevent osteoporosis.

But, other research has suggested that calcium supplements may increase a woman's risk of heart attack or stroke, Kern said.

She stressed that the findings apply only to calcium supplements. Calcium from food appears to affect the brain differently than calcium from supplements, Kern explained, and appears to be safe or even protective.

I read about this in one of my science news magazines and this post from FReeper Cecily piqued my memory.

Sound of Music Actress Charmian Carr Dies at 73 from Complications from Dementia

I emailed it to my sisters.

My mother took high doses of calcium and died from a brain tumor at age 87.

Sorry about your mother.

And thank you for this post about the calcium supplements. We’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t.

I’ve heard the problem is an overbalance of Ca vs Mg.

“OMG!! No one knows what causes death at 87!!!”

I guess coroners are just wasting time doing autopsies and must be wrong with their conclusions since no one knows....

I'm a 72 year-old male and I was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes about three months ago. I have been taking the drug Metformin since that diagnosis. Look below at the good news I found:

US FDA gives OK for human trial of metformin as anti-ageing drug to prolong life until 120 years

I've read numerous articles about Metformin's anti-ageing, anti-cancer properties.
I may ask my doctor to increase my dosage, ha, ha.

“Taking calcium supplements with the hope of keeping osteoporosis at bay may raise an older woman’s risk of dementia......”

So what if she’s (my wife) taking it for cramps in her fingers as it is the only thing she finds she can take to alleviate those painful cramps in her fingers? The cramps start, she takes 1000 mg Calcium, and minutes later no more cramps.

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

I’ve heard the problem is an overbalance of Ca vs Mg.

And you should mix in vitamin K, which helps to prevent arterial calcification.

Thanks for posting.
I was taking D3, calcium and magnesium, because the common wisdom was that those three must be taken together.
Doc recently told me to drop the calcium after lab work showed it had elevated way too high.
And I *am* feeling a little demented lately. :-)

Be careful with magnesium. The citrate kind can give you the trots.

For heaven’s sake she needs it therefore she should take it.

Those who just take it with their vitamin have a choice to make.

FYI I don’t take it.

Here in Michigan, Meijer gives Metformin Rx for free. When I was on it, I would go to Meijer just for the Metformin. While I was waiting, of course, I’d spend $50 or so on other stuff. Suckers!

YUP.

I take 100mcg of K2 daily because I take 10,000 IU of vitamin D daily.

again, then coroners are wasting time?

my Grandpa got a clean bill of health in September years ago. Collapsed and died a few months later. He was 87. Coroner report helped family understand what happened since it wasn’t heart attack or anything obvious and his check ups had been all good.

Watch Dr G and others. Death cause at any age can be figured out.

Some people care about health and causes of disease or death at any age, I guess you don’t.
