A Seminole County jury deliberated for nearly four hours Friday before finding a man guilty of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm for shooting at George Zimmerman's truck in May.
The jury also convicted Matthew Apperson, 27, of shooting into an occupied vehicle and aggravated assault with a firearm. The Winter Springs man faces a minimum of 20 years in prison because the crimes involved a gun. His wife and mother, who attended the five-day trial, walked out crying and would not comment.
Apperson, a paralegal, sought to convince jurors he acted in self defense when he shot a single bullet from his .357 Magnum into Zimmerman's car on May 11, 2015. Apperson testified that Zimmerman threatened to shoot him and flashed a gun first. The bullet missed Zimmerman's face, lodging itself in the truck's metal frame.
Assistant State Attorney Stewart Stone told jurors that Apperson instigated the confrontation and chased Zimmerman in a car, which was caught on video surveillance from a nearby post office.

No. Not the same woman. I am shocked this man could have a wife who loves him. He is truly deranged. Blew smoke in the faces of the press and urinated on his neighbors porch just because he was ticked off at her. He is truly creepy.

I assume the reporter isn’t saying ANY crime involving a gun gets 20 years.

Otherwise, the reporter would have written “his wife and his mother”.”
Maybe ten years ago they would have phrased the statement so that the identify was clear but not any longer. With too many current articles, it is anyone’s guess as to what really happened and who is really responsible based on the sentence structure.
Florida has a 10-20-life firearm law. If you bring a firearm in the commission of a crime, even if you didn't brandish/unholster it, its 10 years. If you discharge a firearm in the commission of a crime, even if you didn't hit anybody, its 20 years. These are in addition to whatever else you get sentenced for. And with the "Truth in Sentencing" statute, you must serve 80% of the time before parole.

Damn, you’d think that Chiraq, His Arrogance’s home hood would have the same serious penalties for guns used in crimes .... but nooooooo, says the retiring police chief - 1 year.

Good, glad to hear this Apperson person will be out of decent society for a while. It’s only by luck that he’s not a murderer. Zimmerman could easily have been killed by Apperson’s actions. I hope he gets the help he needs in jail.
By the way, the article says Apperson is 27 years old. There’s no way that guy is only 27. He’s got to be pushing 40. His beautiful wife looks to be mid to late 30s.
