An Indianapolis man who was mistakenly shot by a police officer responding to an armed robbery said Friday that he didn't know officers had arrived at his home until he was blinded by their flashlights after being shot.

Carl Williams, a 48-year-old postal worker, said at a news conference that he was in his garage with his handgun at his right side early Tuesday awaiting police when he was shot, apparently just as officers were arriving.

the shoot first ask who’s there second mentality needs to stop

Agreed. As I noted before, I think the homeowner bears some responsibility here due to his foolish actions.

He was - of course - no threat to the police at all. But was he a perceived threat great enough to get him shot? Hard to say at this point, but I'd say probably not. He certainly didn't shoot at the cops, and he probably wasn't pointing in their direction either.

If I were on a wrongful-shooting jury, I give the guy a decent amount of money. But I would still find him partially at fault.

Where have we gleaned the detail that the homeowner was “holding the intruder at gunpoint”?

That certainly would point to an abysmal reading of the situation by police if so. And one would also be curious if the officers had noticed the intruder.

Some cops shouldn’t be cops. They shoot anything that moves. Fortunately this is just a cop who is scared and shoots the first thing that moves. And not a cold blooded murder like that cop in Chicago.

That being said we need cops. Its a tough job. We would like them all to be good cops, both in quality and in morals.

I would throw my hands up (as the homeowner). Plenty of time to straighten it out.

Of course if the perp is still in the nearby picture, the part where it is straightened out should be done with some expedience

Um, the RP told 911 dispatch: ""Williams called 911 to report that a young man had pointed a gun at his wife in their driveway and demanded her car keys.""

The RP was nearly 50 years old.

Whoops!

.
Did he fail to notify the dispatcher that he would be armed?

Big mistake if he did.

After hearing some strange noises front of the house in the small hours today, I was up armed.
If you have time a Kydex (plastic) holster is a good idea since it won’t `collapse’ like a worn leather holster and you can easily re-holster when you see flashing lights.
Sounds like the homeowner thought the robber might still be lurking.
Inside the waist band appendix carry, if your adrenaline isn’t such that you won’t shoot yourself and if you had time to put on trousers so you can conceal with a short tee-shirt. Otherwise put the gun down.
Btw it was the dog bumping around, seeing if there were any molecules of Alpo left in his bowl.

Next door neighbor is a state trooper. I called the city cops on a guy banging on his door at 3:00 AM at the same time he did. He held the guy at gunpoint until 7 cop cars came in both ways on the street. By the time they got to him, the trooper had his Glock in his pocket and his hands as high up as he could get them. They sorted out who was who later.

"Why did you shoot me?"

"We're cops, it's what we do."

GEICO!

In all seriousness; why didn’t this guy stay on the phone with the dispatcher so he could relay information to the responding officers?

Such as “I’m in the garage, with a gun and my description is this, this and this and let me know when the officers arrive so I can put away my gun and signal them who I am.”

How nice of Yahoo to report this.

I’m sure they will follow up with hundreds of thousands of articles about cops who did NOT shoot anyone this week./s

I can’t wait.

I disagree that this man bears any responsibility at all.

My understanding is that cops are trained to shoot when no other options are available. The guy was on his property!

Cops shooting before saying anything sounds like the shooter shouldn’t be a cop.

Being a cop is a tough job, but they are responsible for their actions.

That a poster opined that perhaps he was trying to get shot in order to collect is absolutely mind-boggingly stupid. Hopefully it was just a bad joke, but it didn’t seem like one to me.
