TRENTON Donald Trump's apparent pivot away from his calls for mass deportations of millions of undocumented immigrants is partially the result of prodding by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
And, Giuliani says, even more Christie-inspired changes to Trump's immigration stance will be forthcoming, like his call for tracking immigrant visas like Fedex packages, and using the E-Verify system to reduce illegal labor.
In an interview with NJ Advance Media on Thursday, Giuliani, a top adviser to the Republican presidential nominee, said Trump's recent reversal on immigration policy came after his inner circle for several weeks suggested a more nuanced, practical, and humane approach in dealing with the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants.
Asked if Christie was responsible for Trump's softening approach to immigration, the former mayor responded: "The answer to that question is yes."
Trump's pledge to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S. and deport 11 undocumented immigrants rallied supporters early in the campaign.
Christie, Giuliani said, "is not the only one" counseling a more moderate stance on those who immigrated illegally, "but he is of great value to him."
The Trump campaign declined to comment on Christie's involvement. The governor is an adviser to Trump and heads his transition effort.
A spokesman for Christie declined to comment.
Last summer, Trump vowed to employ a "deportation force" to expel all undocumented immigrants from the U.S.

But on Wednesday, Trump appeared at a town hall meeting with Fox News' Sean Hannity and said he wasn't sure if he wanted carry through on his prior promises to tear out the nation's entire unauthorized immigrant population root and branch.

"I will tell you that most folks that I've met in my state who have come here to this country illegally, have come here because they want to work," Christie said at a town hall in Londonderry, N.H., that same month. "Because they want to support themselves, they want to support their families."
At one time I suggested Chris Christie for VP if it was between him and Mike Pence. I was obviously very wrong. I have come to eat my crow. Pence is doing a great job, even though he does define himself as a "compassionate" conservative. I don't like that term because it hearkens me back to George Bush.
Ann Coulter would probably be surprised by this because she thought he had recently added new consultants that urged him to change, but Ann would be shocked that it's Christie who has been there for months. Didn't Ann once support Christie for President?
He indicated a softening at the Hannity Townhall when he seemed to indicate that if someone was here for 20 years they could stay but without citizenship and would have to pay back taxes. However, at his rally the next night and in his interview with Anderson, he seemed to revert back to his initial position. According to Giuliani, he hasn't made a firm decision yet, although Giuliani thinks he'll support a guest worker program for livestock and farm workers who entered illegally once the border is secure.
We know Trump will build the wall and will deport the criminals. I do think that with e-verify, cutting off benefits, and cutting off sanctuary cities (all things Trump wants to do), you will have a lot of people leave. His website also says he wants to end birthright citizenship, so that is going to end people coming and having anchor babies.
What we have to see is what he is going to do about the people still here who aren't criminals (other than the fact they are breaking immigration law). I look forward to his speech.
By the way, Chris Christie will be on ABC Sunday Morning with Martha Raddatz. Let's see if she asks him about this article.
When you turn the milk into .1% milk and honey into lightly sugared water, that 'land of milk and honey (and benefits)' doesn't look so good. IF YOU CUT OFF the incentives like medical care, benefits, etc. they will find some other county...I'm hoping Norway or Sweden or somewhere.
Christie is obsessed w/ getting crossover votes....
.....b/c, in his view, it’s how he won solid Democrat NJ w/ landslide margins.
I think what surprised me the most was the when Trump asked the audience during Hannity’s town hall, the heartier response was for allowing them to remain. Many wanted them all deported, but the majority wanted the more “compassionate” route.
I think there are consequences when one breaks the law. It may take some time for them to unfold (think Cosby), but eventually it will catch up. Oh, except if your name is Clinton.
I agree. Trump hasn’t talked about mass deportation since the beginning of the campaign, he says that he doesn’t even like the term. Enforcing current law is a much more palatable response that can hardly be argued with but that will (hopefully) achieve the same result.
“Trumps big immigration reversal” Oh yes, and let’s not forget “Trump flip flops” printed all over the liberal media for the last week. Then I see an interview with Trump on CNN with Anderson Cooper, and gee whiz wouldn’t you know it - His immigration policy is exactly the same as when he first announced he was running for POTUS. This is exactly what he talked about and in the order it was spoken......
1. He’s going to build a wall, Mexico is going to pay for it.
2. People here illegally who are convicted of crimes will be first on the list to be deported.
3. Everyone who is here illegally must leave and can then apply to come here legally.
REVERSAL ON IMMIGRATION? FLIP FLOPPING? WHERE IS IT?
Compassion does not always have to entail a huge mandatory expense for the benefactor(s). You can be compassionate while still firmly holding to basic tenets like WORK, PAY YOUR OWN WAY and SELF SUPPORTING —— and CONTRIBUTING.
I think what surprised me the most was the when Trump asked the audience during Hannitys town hall, the heartier response was for allowing them to remain. Many wanted them all deported, but the majority wanted the more compassionate route.
There should have been a followup question of “ including law breakers, drug dealers, rapists etc “
REVERSAL ON IMMIGRATION? FLIP FLOPPING? WHERE IS IT?
Agree. There isn’t one. He’s talking about doing what Obama should have done and protecting the majority of those who are law abiding regardless of how we are part of america.
There is no reversal.
More Ministry of Propaganda efforts to divide Trump supporters from Trump.
I still haven’t heard Trump change his position
I hear all these claims but haven’t seen a position paper change or hears Trump utter one word different
Ignore all media
Get Out The Vote
The MSM sets up an extreme position and then claims that the candidate is weakening when the candidate doesn’t follow that exact position.
No, that is at least a Newt meme... heard Newt speak about this more than 10 years ago.
And Christie won because people hated the feckless, Imus-loving Corzine who thought a top policy priority was pointing out that Christie was fat. Even Jerseyeans saw through that, considering most of them are pretty tubby themselves.
How he won reelection is beyond me...
As each of those go, those on the other end of the spectrum (tax paying, self sufficient, demonstrative effort to integrate into American society by English language and the like) get green cards with no chance of citizenship or, at the very least, a much longer path than they would have had if they'd come legally.
IOW, you make the expulsion of the chaff the key for allowing the wheat to stay. The burden is on the illegals to show how they are a benefit to the country, it isn't on the country to prove otherwise.
This is a compassionate policy, but it has to start with the comprehensive position of deporting all who are here illegally and enforcing the law. Exceptions are introduced only once it is shown that the law is being enforced.
If you will read what Donald said instead of the reporter’s terminology,he[Donald Trump] did not say anything. This is just one more case of a reporter or reporters taking what Donald says out of context, adding words of their own, twisting the facts, omitting words spoke by Donald.
Reference?
Exactly. This is the media campaigning for Hillary. This is disinformation meant to disillusion and divide Trump supporters. Don’t believe any of it. The media is pure filth.
And it is not working as far as dividing Trump supporters goes. It is separating the pseudo Trump supporters from the bona fide Trump supporters.
“He indicated a softening at the Hannity Townhall when he seemed to indicate ...”
“seemed” and “indicated” does not mean “said” or “declared.”
I saw the Hannity town hall, and Trump was responding directly to a question about kicking people out who have been here for decades and have a job and families.
So, instead of “softening,” what’s Trump GOING to say? “GET ‘EM OUT OF HERE!”? Really? The media would have torn the “heartless” candidate apart, and suggested he wants to be the next Hitler, with gangs of roving (U)SS troopers searching block-to-block for illegal aliens so we could kick them back over the border with their jack-boots.
In other words, Hannity, of all people, managed to trap Trump with a lose / lose question.
Now the media is on to stage 2 (or 3) - making up conspiracy theories to explain Trump’s “apparent” change of mind, and trying to find someone else behind the unexplained use of a single word on a talk show. They are vile, and to pay attention to them is to buy right into it.
Trump needs to do exactly what I think he IS doing this weekend - firming up his exact plans on how to deal with illegal immigrants, and then make a clear speech on it, so there won’t be any doubt what he thinks about it and what he plans to do. Say something they CAN’T spin and go over the empty heads of the media yet again.
Meanwhile, Hillary will continue to hide - not appearing at rallies, not giving press conferences, not giving town halls, not giving meaningful speeches - maybe just appearing with a comedian somewhere to open a pickle jar, and, to the vile media, this is all as it should be, and nothing should or will be said about it.
