Etiquette while observing the national anthem became a major talking point of the Olympics when many Americans were upset with gymnast Gabrielle Douglas for not following the flag code to the letter.
United States Olympian and U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Sam Kendricks went as far as to stop running in the middle of a pole vault attempt to turn and salute the flag when he heard "The Star-Spangled Banner" playing in the Olympic Stadium during a qualifying round.

Fox had a short interview with him this morning. Apparently Kendrick’s father is his coach....and this fine young man, and, while he was proud of his medal achievement, it’s not about the medal it’s about the journey to achieve it.
Remarkable. Wonderful role model.

He did the right thing. However, it appears that nowadays they stand at attention differently than when I served (1970-1974). In my day, when we stood at attention we stood still, no fidgeting, no looking around. Times change, I guess. When I served we didn’t promote transgenders to command positions, either; hell, we didn’t even have such creatures.
I think he was looking around for the flag. That’s a big stadium and he probably he trouble locating where the medal ceremony was taking place. The look on his face seemed to suggest that he was wanting to find the flag and not biding his time in a fidgety manner so he could get back to his event.
Well, then, that makes sense.

One thing the military drills into your head is respect for the flag.
Used to be grade schools did that just fine.

Reminds me of one day just before a Navy football game at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis.
I had just come out of the Men’s Room when the National Anthem started: all the people in line at the concessions, as well as all the workers behind the counter stopped what they were doing and took an appropriate posture until the anthem concluded.
Made me proud, just like this young man!
I can almost guarantee this guy has a hard-assed CSM or 1SG. Not taking ANYTHING away from him. Just sayin’
Go to the Garden for a NY Ranger game and the cheering goes on throughout the entire song. Some say it is disrespectful, other say that cheering is part of the love for flag and country. Yet others say it is because NY Ranger fans are lunatics.
I stand perfectly still with hand over heart for the National Anthem. When I am at an event and people are singing it, so do I. When I am at the Garden and people are cheering through the entire song, so do I.
We show our respect different ways. Now take the picture of Obama and the rat candidates. Everyone has their hand over their heart except Obama. That I would call disrespect, and a sign of things to come, which we did in fact witness.

Every last one of them needs something better to do with their lives... this is the kind of thing that only losers who have nothing to do with themselves but stick their noses in other people’s business and criticize care about.
Grade schools are too busy teaching kids how to put condoms on bananas to teach anything so frivolous as patriotism or flag etiquette.
I admit. I have a thing for flag etiquette. My fault.
Those who don’t respect our national symbols, get no respect from me.

SEC. 595. MILITARY SALUTE FOR THE FLAG DURING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM
Section 301(b)(1) of title 36, United States Code, is amended by striking subparagraphs (A) through (C) and inserting the following new subparagraphs:
``(A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;
``(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and
``(C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart;
Note: Part (C) applies to those not in the military and non-veterans. The phrase "men not in uniform" refers to civil service uniforms like police, fire fighters, and letter carriers - non-veteran civil servants who might normally render a salute while in uniform.

As a veteran, I consistently avail myself of this privilege (signed into law on Oct. 14, 2008, by President G.W. Bush)...

I'm working on a business-card-sized extract of the law to hand out at patriotic assemblies.
Also, since (as chairman of our county Historical Commission) I'm honored to officiate at numerous flag-raising ceremonies, I always announce this before the ceremonies begin...
