UPI/CVoter poll: Donald Trump sticks to script, comes to within 1% of Hillary Clinton's lead

WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The UPI/CVoter daily presidential tracking poll released Monday shows Donald Trump closing in on Hillary Clinton's lead -- which now stands at 0.7 percent -- possibly a reflection of the Republican sticking largely to the issues last week.

The online poll shows Clinton with 48.19 percent to Trump's 47.47 in polling through Saturday. In one day, her lead declined by 2.9 percentage points. On Friday, she led Trump 49.45 to 45.85.

Trump's rise in the UPI/CVoter poll could indicate voters are being swayed by what the real estate mogul says -- and doesn't say -- in public.

Trump's tone in his speeches has been tempered in the past week as he relies on a teleprompter in remarks at rallies and largely stays away from more controversial statements. On Thursday in Charlotte, N.C., Trump said he regretted past comments that have caused people "personal pain."

Trump has regained ground he lost during tracking periods when he made controversial comments about the Muslim Gold Star family of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq, as well as when he hedged whether he'd endorse Speaker Paul Ryan in his re-election campaign. Clinton also improved in the polls when Trump made comments about the 2nd Amendment some critics interpreted as a veiled threat against the Democratic nominee.

So while Clinton largely sticks to her scripted speeches and declines to take questions from reporters, swings in the UPI/CVoter daily tracker could fluctuate based on what Trump has to say, or chooses not to say, in a given time period.

Also within this past week, Trump has overhauled his senior campaign staff. Trump hired former Breitbart executive Steve Bannon, and also promoted veteran pollster and personal confidant Kellyanne Conway to a senior position. And campaign chairman Paul Manafort has departed.

On Friday, Trump also toured flood-ravaged Louisiana, a move Democratic Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards applauded for shining a light on the disaster there.

Meanwhile, the post-convention bumps both candidates enjoyed have largely leveled out this week. One group that has not rebounded since the two major party conventions, though, are those in the "others" category -- defined in the poll as any respondent who declined to pick either Trump or Clinton.

In mid-July, up to 16.85 percent of voters chose "others" in the UPI/CVoter poll, a number that has continuously dropped since. "Others" voters dropped below double digits July 21, the last day of the Republican National Convention.

As of Saturday, 4.34 percent of the respondents chose this option compared with 5.48 percent the previous Saturday.

The UPI/CVoter online tracking poll surveys about 200 people each day, leading to a sample size of roughly 1,400 people during any seven-day span.

Because the poll is conducted online and individuals self-select to participate, a margin of error cannot be calculated. The poll has a credibility interval of 3 percentage points. This seven-day span includes data collected from Aug. 14-20, when 1,689 individuals were surveyed. Of them, 1,191 identified themselves as likely voters.

Sticking to the script ended this morning. On Tweeter he attacked weeter the low-rated MSNBC Morning Joe for their 24/7 negative coverage of him. He threatened to expose more proof that Scarborough and Mika are having an affair. So, once the media picks up on this, all we’re going to be hearing is how Trump can’t “pivot” and how thin-skinned he is. Well to hell with the pivot for whatever that means, but getting into spats with no-bodies when you should be attacking Hillary Clinton and Obama, AND NO ONE ELSE, will in the end sink him. There is no bigger Trump fan that I am, but he’s his own worst enemy. He knows damn well they are trying to lure him into a fight and he falls for this BS every time.

Wonder if Mark Levin(The Purist Crepe Hanger)will report any of these polls. I guess your hyperbole doesn’t has disconnect with reality Mark. I thought the only way Donald could catch(If that was ever valid) and overtake Hillary, was to parrot Ronald Reagan’s 1964 speech constantly and use the word, “Liberty and Constiutionalism, Liberty and Constiutionalism” like a pull string child’s toy. Umm Mark Ted Cruz would have truly gotten his as* handed to him this election, you really have to get over it. I mean he just can’t get over it..he was whining Friday STILL about Ted Cruz. Ted Cruz who Mark, nobody has talked about the guy in weeks, a back bench Senator , who sh8t the bed when it comes to his political career.

I disagree about the media, they are fair game. It’s a tweet, relax Francis..the guy is not a robot. Donald’s style is to hit back every time. There are times when he should keep his mouth shut and well the way Mika and Scabs attack him, one tweet, a brilliant, “Have to stopped beating your wife” type reaction was a master stroke. Shut those aholes up, or have them get into a feud and have their affair exposed..hmmm. When it comes to media, he has to hit them hard, every day, that meme works, the average Job Baglunch completely distrusts them. What then complaining about the way DT treats them is a working strategy? Clearly it doesn’t.

I LOVED Ted 2 or 3 months ago. The NY values thing made me start to think. Then it was FASTLY downhill from there.

The non endorsement speech left him dead to me.

Dont care what he does, where he is, what he says, he’s dead to me.

Yet I got responses on here that he is still a very conservative senator and a good one.

Whatever. I dont vote in Texas.

Dead and illegal is not what worries me.

Digital destruction of votes in key precincts in key states (like they did in 2012) is what worries me.

I agree with you, but the media will twist the story into Trump being the bad guy and not being able to stay focused. And what’ll make it worse is when Fox News jumps on the story in the way of Megyn Kelly when she comes back tonight. I guarantee you she starts her show by saying once again Trump has attacked a woman and she’ll take it from there for at least half her show.

Cruz’s numbers are underwater in Texas.

I think most Texas GOP voters (conservative, and less conservative) are in agreement with you.

“He’s dead to me” is a particularly poignant phrase btw. I think it is also very apt and many are in agreement.

Clinton seems to think she can stay in the background (or home in bed) and coast through the campaign that way.

actualy, that’s the smartest thing she can do; she is an awful candidate, and she can’t help but behave in public like what she atually is; a hammering harpy, a hectoring harridan...but she can read the tea leaves the same as anyone else...

look at RCP’s electoral map, and you see why she can’t come out until she has to, at the debates; look at the map, and see she is sitting with 272 EV’s, and there is very little questionable about the distribution...but if she ventures her unlikeable self out there for anything but formal debate, she’s committing suicide, she is that terrible a candidate...

I think the polls may be off because they are based on the 2008 and 2012 election turnouts where more democrats voted. This time all indications are that more republican and independents will come out to vote and the dems may stay home. I hope I am right.

“I think the polls may be off because they are based on the 2008 and 2012 election turnouts where more democrats voted.”

IMHO you have a valid point. This is not 2012 for example. I also like the way these polls are trending in Trumps favor. By the way I have not seen many polls out lately from the alphabet networks.

I agree with you. I don’t know why he wastes time with these stupid little spats. The only thing I can think of, is that Trump has figured out that if he just chills for a week or two then his poll numbers pop back up. So maybe he is still in attack mode with 80 days remaining, and will focus on restraint mode in October. But knowing Trump, probably not.

Dont care what he does, where he is, what he says, he’s dead to me.

The only people I hear talking negatively about Ted Cruz are sore-winner Trump people. Ted could have made the convention truly ugly but opted not to do so.

And here you are in the general election fight and you're still winging about Cruz running a strong second in the primaries. Get over it, already.

Cruz is a joke. Strong showing :)

He’ll be flipping burgers in about two years.

But he wont endorse Burger King while he works there :)

I am surprised that neither Trump, nor even Matthew Drudge of the Drudge Report has yet mentioned the Hillary Clinton diapers story, especially considering that WikiLeaks’ top lawyer in London, was murdered - pushed in front of a train - within 3 days of Wikileaks’ Hillary diaper story breaking!

I really liked listening to Mark but he has gone chugging around the bend with his kamikaze type behavior toward Trump and his how do I describe it, man-crush on Cruz, that is just plan creepy at this point.

I realize he has issues with Trump, I do on some issues, but dear God if he could stomach the likes of McCain and Romney and not Trump I have to wonder what team he is truly pulling for.

I stopped listening to him months ago, he is more depressing than CNN and at times sounds like a spokesman for Hillary. Gees Mark give it a rest before you self-immolate like Cruz did.

This race is like a dam cracking and crumbling. Soon Trump will be unstoppable like a river breaking free the more people learn about the real Hillary Clinton. Maybe Trump should talk about the real Hillary Clinton.
