Two Syrian Su-24 Fencer attempting to fly over a Kurdish-held area in northeastern Syria where U.S. SOF (Special Operations Forces) are operating, get intercepted by U.S. F-22 and encouraged to depart the airspace. Twice in the last few days, Syrian jets performing air strikes close to where U.S. SOF are operating in northeastern Syria caused coalition aircraft to scramble.
On Aug. 18, U.S. jets were dispatched to intercept the Syrian attack planes that were attacking targets near Hasakah supporting regime forces fighting the Syrian Kurdish forces. About 300 U.S. military operate in the same area, training Kurdish forces who are fighting Daesh.
Syrian pilots did not respond to the radio calls of the Kurdish on the general emergency frequency nor did they acknowledge calls attempted by the coalition on the air safety channel used for communication with the Russian aircraft operating over Syria.
Anyway, by the time U.S. fighters reached the area, the Syrian planes had already left.
Following the first close encounter the Pentagon warned Assad regime to not fly or conduct raids in the area where the American SOF are operating. However, on Aug. 19, two Su-24 Fencers, attempted again to penetrate the airspace near Hasakah.
This time, the two Syrian Arab Air Force attack planes were met by American F-22 Raptors (most probably already operating in the same area providing Combat Air Patrol).
As reported by ABC, a U.S. official said the presence of American F-22 aircraft encouraged the Syrian aircraft to depart the airspace without further incident. No weapons were fired by the coalition fighters.
This is not the first time the F-22 presence deters foreign military aircraft from harassing U.S. forces.
In March 2013, few months after two Sukhoi Su-25 attack planes operated by the Pasdaran (informal name of the IRGC the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution) attempted to shoot down an American MQ-1 flying a routine surveillance flight in international airspace the Pentagon decided to escort the drones involved in ISR (intelligence surveillance reconnaissance) with fighter aircraft, including the Raptors.
In one very well-known episode, F-22 stealth jets providing HVAAE (High Value Air Asset Escort) to a U.S. Predator flew under the Iranian F-4E Phantoms that had intercepted the drone then pulled up on their left wing and then called them and radioed a famous you really ought to go home that allegedly scared the Iranian pilots off saving the drone.
Which encapsulated Russian missile is that?
Completely agree!
RE: “We need to get out of Syria - or - work with the Russians to prop up Assad. I say let the Russians do it. We have wasted enough blood and treasure.
We need to get obutthole tried”
This is what would hit the Raptor.
These were Syrian pilots which is probably why our Pentagon showed bravado... The Syrians are operating over their own country. And the Russians are in Syria legally at the request of the legal government. What is the legal status of our forces in Syria?
this whole story makes no sense
the Syrians would not be attacking Kurdish forces unless the so-called Kurds were part of the islamic radicals
Our spec ops are in the wrong country. Our government is supporting the bad guys.

SS-20
Recently upgraded to MIRV with 10 warheads.
kinda like Bosnia?
The Su-24 is a bomber with limited fighter abilities - an Su-27 would be a different matter altogether, but they are not operated by Syrians only Russians and were with drawn some months ago, unless some are still hanging around Tartus.
No, we’re covering the kurds as they keep taking more and more ISIS territory.
Considering they’re the only REAL army ISIS has had to battle all these years, I’d say they deserve air cover.
Tell whomever told you that we were the invaders was wrong.
Much smaller (count the wheels). Phased out in 1988.
I believe it was based upon the upper-two stages of an SS-18 SATAN.
This is an SS-27 SICKLE/TOPOL-M:
Much larger (more wheels). There are a couple variants of the SS-27, I have to scrutinize images.
Not necessarily true. Recent pilot interviews and flight tests revealed the F-35 surpassed the performance of all of our current aircraft excluding the F-22.
The F-22 is a air superiority fighter whereas the F-35 is multi-role, multi-varient.
The F-22 replaces the F-15 and the F-35 replaces every other fighter.
The Obama administration support Isis in 2010. Now they support the Kurds pretty pathetic if you ask me
Well damn. I don’t know what that is, but I WANT ONE!
Nope. Syria is repressing Kurds and with Turkey has regularly invaded Kurd villages under the UN protected post-colony of Syria. Syria is a fictitious entity.
But not invisibly.
Yes they were shut down by the Obey Amendment (Obey has since been retired). There were at that time 187 planes now there are less due to attrition and a few crashes.
The tooling remains as well as the videos on how to do what with which, but the skills are nearly lost and would have to be relearned.
Various articles have appeared on restarting the line - look using this search: What it would take to make more F-22s.
Basically the F-22 uses obsolete tech and to this day has not been fully armed with LR BVR missiles nor heads up helmet (which tech is nearly 40 years old).
It might be cheaper to start from scratch, but then it would be a 20 year lead before production and operational combat status could be achieved.
Meanwhile, the F-22 Chinese knock off, the J-20, will be combat ready in 3 years. All the while the USAF is desperately trying to upgrade its fleet of F-15s to match the Chinese J-10 by 2032 which will be retired after the J-20 becomes ready. You see the problem here?
Putin is illegaly in Syria and Syria is an illegal UN post colonial entity of various unrelated tribes. Asking the British to be under German command today would be less insulting than telling Kurds to put up with Syrian/UN government dominated by arabs
