A chief petty officer has become the first woman to earn the Navy's "silver dolphins," signaling an enlisted sailor qualified to serve aboard a submarine.

Chief culinary specialist Dominique Saavedra will deploy aboard the nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine Michigan in coming months, the first sub to deploy with a crew including enlisted female sailors.

According to an announcement from Submarine Group 9, out of Puget Sound, Washington, Saavedra received her pin at a ceremony Tuesday, marking a major milestone for female sailors.

Ain’t going to work. I don’t care if this woman is a two bottle of whiskey at closing time. If she is there something is bound to happen.

Won’t the wives love THIS..?!

As for women in the Navy . . . unless you have a military ID card in your wallet, shut up. I served 20 years. My husband served 22. You don't know what you are talking about. I'll wait for your apology.

I’m disgusted with the comments on this post. You should be ashamed of yourselves!

Technically, USS Michigan is no longer a boomer. I don't know whether or not the Tomahawk conversion changed the operating protocols from those of boomers.

From wikipedia:

"As of June 2007, Michigan has been converted to an SSGN at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.[4] Her hull classification symbol then changed from SSBN-727 to SSGN-727. See the section on SSGN conversions of the Ohio-class article for more information."

Welcome to FR. The sex-obsessed male is our "Oh, what was that?"

If you assume posters hate women, you can avoid being surprised.

Best wishes and all that.

If Shillery becomes president, this sailor might get a chance to get submarined by her commander-in-chief.

"Can't just surface a boomer and sail to the nearest port."

Several years ago my son was badly injured on a deployed boomer. They went full speed toward Azores, intending to evac via helo after permission to surface. It was then decided to use a RIB when in range.

RIB ride to Azores, P-3 to NAS JAX, C-9 Nightingale to Andrews and several operations. They saved his arm, but he lost 30% or so of strength, grip, etc.

She is a cook.

Then she has her work cut out for her, during my time the cook served particularly good food from an impossibly small galley.

Secret was cash food allowance, we spent it at civilian suppliers.

I second Tax-chick’s advice. She’s a wise woman. Best of luck and thank you for your service.

She is a cook.

Snowflake media misses the irony.

Somewhere JRandomFreeper is smiling and saying "Nobody suspects the cook!"

When I got my dolphins, you had to actually go to sea! If you were in the yards, they’d send you to another boat for a patrol so you could get your at-sea quals done. Or you waited until your boat got underway.

I could see getting a few signatures but “qualified” no eFen way. How can you be qualified if you have never even gone to sea. I can't wait till she blows the shitters on herself and everybody comes to see what the screaming is all about. It will look cute with the turds dripping out of her hair.

Hitlery will cede US naval operations to the oversight of the United Nations and the United Unicorn Fantasy Club as long as she can make a dollar. Once a grifter.......

I want to the sub ball in Hawaii right after a big hazing stink in the early 90’s. They give dolphins to the most recently qualified. Even the admiral pinned them on in front of everyone.

Some people are so worried about political correctness being used as the basis for all decisions nowadays that they seem to assume any decision like this one has to be PC gone too far.

I’m not a woman so don’t have that personal connection to feeling insulted by the comments but as a retired Naval officer, I’m rather stunned at the assumption that a Chief won’t be able to maintain discipline and self-control enough to avoid inappropriate relationships leading to pregnancy.

Her brothers are NOT going to allow that to happen. The Chief’s Mess is tight. Thank God most of those on this thread are clueless.
