A chief petty officer has become the first woman to earn the Navy's "silver dolphins," signaling an enlisted sailor qualified to serve aboard a submarine. Chief culinary specialist Dominique Saavedra will deploy aboard the nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine Michigan in coming months, the first sub to deploy with a crew including enlisted female sailors. According to an announcement from Submarine Group 9, out of Puget Sound, Washington, Saavedra received her pin at a ceremony Tuesday, marking a major milestone for female sailors.

In a little valley ringed by trees on the edge of the Presidio of San Francisco is a lost cemetery containing the graves of hundreds of merchant seamen, buried years ago and forgotten. The graves are unmarked and the names of many buried there are unknown. The cemetery itself, located just beyond the closed Public Health Service Hospital near 15th Avenue and Lake Street, is invisible. Two California entrepreneurs are developing an IT services business plan that reads like a CIO's paradise: sharply lower IT prices coupled with easy access to software and engineering outsourcing developers just a short boat ride away. It's the "Code Boat," a plan by David Cook and Roger Green, the founders of SeaCode. LONDON -- Britain's Royal Navy yesterday announced a campaign to recruit gays and lesbians. The navy said it asked Stonewall, a gay rights lobbying group, to help develop the campaign, which could include ads in the gay press. Britain lifted its ban on homosexuals serving in the military in 2000 after a European court ruled that their exclusion was unlawful. In a separate announcement, the government said yesterday that same-sex couples can begin entering into civil unions in December. A law passed last year gives same sex-couples the right to form legally binding partnerships and share pensions. (Reuters)

The Coast Guard intercepted and boarded the ship, 'Athena' off the coast, then escorted it upriver to be docked. Since it docked at the Port of Longview Friday, it's been under constant surveillance from a Coast Guard Gunboat with Coast Guard and customs agents watching from shore.
