NOAA Announces Plan To Silence US Oil Rigs, Dredges and Ships

The ocean has gotten noisier for decades, with man-made racket from oil drilling, shipping and construction linked to signs of stress in marine life that include beached whales and baby crabs with scrambled navigational signals.

The United States aims to change that as a federal agency prepares a plan that could force reductions in noise-making activities, including oil exploration, dredging and shipping off the nation’s coast.

“It’s a global warming problem. It causes hurricanes, which churn up the oceans, which makes noise, which confuses the see critters.

Also, a lot of those ships are carrying oil and LPG. If we grounded them all, it would be quieter, there would be fewer things for the critter to run into, and there would be less global warming.”

Wasn’t this in the Dem platform this year? If not, why not?

Less noise in the ocean will make our submarines a lot easier to find.

Oh, they forgot to mention that our navy would be disbanded, too.

Loss of use of active Sonar by navy ships means less training in its use. No other naval power has that restriction.

Loss of noise aimed at oil rigs and sup[port ships means heavy investments in quite prop tech (for starters), which in turn make US oil more expensive and less competitive on the world market.

Carried Further
Once enacted the noise restrictions will be deliberately spread to other marine transportation - including personal Tupperware out and inboards. Forget water skiing.

Carried Still Further
Due to heavy restrictions to protect marine life for the future and for the children, the US mandates only sail power on all private and government ships. Old Ironsides will be brought out as a template for advanced US Navy warships. The political and other well connected elite will gather to watch the glorious sight of the Navy under full sail as it sets off on its months long voyage to meet the challenge of the fully nuclear powered Russian navy.

Expect the NOAA SWAT team to be involved.

Is that Jim Cantore in front?

If they believe there is a problem with human induced ocean noise affecting sea creatures ... then can you imagine what these people think about human induced noise on land and the affect on land creatures? They might believe in a final solution to rid the world of human noise. Maybe they should lead the way.

Same here in the San Fran Peninsula. We have about a dozen groups fighting it. As you, we seldom had planes overhead, now it’s a plane every 2-3 minutes all day long as low as 2,800 feet. Sometimes I can see and hear three at the same time.

The FAA is run by arrogant a$$holes — they secretly moved all this traffic and noise over our little town and conveniently found they didn’t need to do an environmental review because their models showed no noise increase anywhere, Now they say “We cannot move the noise as a solution because that would not be fair to other communities”!!

I’ve read how bad it is in Phoenix...sorry you’ve got it over your head. Get involved and fight the bastards.

Oil drilling and exploration is listed first. For a reason.

Their goal is to shut down offshore drilling.

My first thought was a sarcastic one: that theses Luddites are just trying to take the first steps in taking returning us all to the days of nothing but schooners and sails (both “green” and quiet!). Second thought was wondering if I was joking?

“Their goal is to shut down offshore drilling.”

No doubt in my mind that’s precisely their goal.

LOL! Now we’re talking! I’m in Dungeness, Washington country and I want my butter for crabs that are crabby and tasty. Dungeness, Washington. For those boy buttering, knee pad wearing, chin wiping Environweenies, we have the crabby crabs that will snap their finger off or whatever. They can scramble their brains with their Ipod blasting earbuds and take a walk into Dugeness’ nearest crab bed. Snap, snap, pop, ouwwwwwwww! Heeeeeeeeeeee! Sheeeeeeeeeee!
