John Hinckley, Who Tried To Kill A President, Wins His Freedom
NPR ^ | 07/27/2016 | Carrie Johnson

Thirty-five years after he tried to kill a president, John Hinckley has won his freedom.

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., has granted a request for Hinckley to leave the mental hospital where he's lived for decades, to go live full-time with his elderly mother in Williamsburg, Va.

The release could happen as early as next week, the judge ruled. Under the terms of his order, Hinckley is not allowed to contact his victims, their relatives or actress Jodie Foster, with whom he was obsessed. Hinckley also will not be permitted to "knowingly travel" to areas where the current president or members or Congress are present. The judge said Hinckley could be allowed to live on his own or in a group home after one year.

Weren’t his parents with Bush’s father when the shooting happened?

What kind of coincidence is that?

In his defense we all must remember that HE did NOT try to kill Reagan, but the GUN was to blame.

I think this is nuts. But if it is any consolation, however bonkers the judge may be, Hinkley will be at or damn close to the top of the Secret Service watch list for the rest of his life. Every time he has a bowl movement an agent will be waiting for the flush so they can analyze his crap.

[to go live full-time with his elderly mother in Williamsburg, Va...]

She is probably in her nineties by now and will be dead before Hinkley can say “Hi, Mom. I’m home.”

Who exactly is going to care for Hinkley when she passes away?

“The question with Mr. Hinckley is because he has this basic character flaw or personality flaw as it is called, of narcissism, can he really be changed?”

He and the current occupant of the White House share something in common.

“This is a Clinton appointee.”

Yes, and IIRC his first term, and the Congress his first term was majority Democrat.

I guess that like the others, they want to release him so that he feels grateful, while being given his voting rights back by Gov. McAulliffe in Virginia.

Gee, I wonder if that means his gun rights have to be restored too?

Perhaps they will meet him outside the prison with a voter registration form, absentee ballot, and his old gun to hand him.

Talk about a bad time for the release of a person who attempted a political assassination. This is right in the heat of a hotly contested campaign season, when emotions are riding high. Its almost as if....OK better not go there.

The timing is odd. Already the media are replaying the Reagan assassination attempt on a loop. Is this meant to push new would-be assassins over the edge, and into action?
