Warning: This Is Not Cheese. In Russia, Watch What You Eat

If you live in Russia, you may already be worried about what you’re eating. If you’re not worried, maybe you should be.

Watchdogs say dairy producers routinely added starch, chalk and soap to their milk. One-fifth of caviar brands contained bacteria linked to E. coli. Bread bakers were discovered to use “fifth-grade” wheat, the sort usually intended for cattle. More than half the sliced salmon on shop shelves has been judged unsafe.

And those are only the most recent revelations.

Quality control in Russia’s food sector appears to have broken down. Products are plentiful. But behind the glossy labels, their true contents are a lottery.

How did things get so bad?

Eeew....I know people who have eaten dog, cat and monkey meat. I would eat grass and dirt before consuming those animals.

The purpose of the Russian economy is to reward thieves and crooks. Everyone else is a victim.

Only the people who do not care about their health or diets; or people who read news like from the Daily Mail who says Americans are obese.

What was probably dog food from China killed a friend’s Dobermans. Both came down quickly with quickly with kidney failure. Sad to see those dogs go.

That had to be a shock! This is why I cook so much - I know I’m clean and the ingredients are fresh.

We are talking about the same country that drinks sterno fuel to get drunk.

I doubt they will notice.

Much of the bagged rice I see on the shelves here comes from polluted China and India. I don’t know about pre-packaged stuff like Rice-A-Roni, etc.

I have now taken to buying only rice grown in US...Blue Ribbon brand.

Scary that rice is a great absorber of metals such as arsenic :(

I figure any rice grown here is better than China and India.

I was driving thru Arkansas this spring and recognized rice paddies. Turns out they are the the number one producer of rice in US.

I never fed my border collie canned food - it was Nutra-nuggets with lamb no corn but rice and glucosamine for hips and joints. She thrived on it - lived to be almost fourteen.

Apparently the food producers are not bribing the correct officials?

Don't forget melamine in lots of things.

Melamine is 67% nitrogen by weight. It was added because some of the standard tests for protein content of foods actually test for nitrogen content.

Some people will do whatever they can get away with and feel proud of how they outsmarted their stupid customers. There seem to be more of these people in certain places, especially where this kind of intelligence is most admired.

I know a guy who had once been out duck hunting, successfully, and decided to make a quick drive thru the takee outee (oops...) window on the drive home.

After exchanging pleasantries with the lady proprietor, who happened to be working the window, he mentioned that he was getting a fast dinner after a day of duck hunting...

One thing led to another and he drove away with a Schezchuan (SP? Not Cantonese, the other one) dinner gratis... except for the two ventilated, and legally tagged, ducks he left behind with his new friend.

Not unappetizing like nuts and bolts, one would suppose, but still... I've always wondered if the county health inspector had a special Peking duck after that.

Oh oh. There is a Russian shop where I go to buy food items, though I only buy chocolates from Russia. This article didn’t mention chocolate. But it has me wondering what I was actually eating.

Someone noted rice.

Actually, I have done an extensive study of this - brown rice has much more higher arsenic in it than bleached/white rice.

And in my study of rice from all over the world, the highest amount of arsenic was found in California grown brown rice. West Texas was about in third place, very bad.

So no, if you are eating California or West Texas brown rice, you are eating among the top 3 of the worst.

I buy decent Basmati white rice because it tastes good and it keeps very well. Brown rice goes rancid after a few months.
