Cruz aides made late push for Trump endorsement
The Hill ^ | July 20, 2016 | Jonathan Swan

CLEVELAND — Just hours before Ted Cruz took the stage for his convention speech Wednesday night, senior members of Cruz's team were still pushing him to endorse Donald Trump. Cruz never wanted to endorse Trump and is still furious about the personal attacks the GOP presidential nominee made on his family during the primary campaign, sources familiar with the speech preparations told The Hill.

But top aides had concluded he needed to formally endorse Trump at the Republican National Convention.

For Cruz, it was always personal. During the primaries, Trump repeated a tabloid conspiracy theory linking Cruz's father to the man who assassinated President Kennedy, and he tweeted a picture that ridiculed the appearance of Cruz's wife, Heidi.

Trump has never expressed much contrition for those actions.

Still, some aides to Cruz, a Republican senator from Texas, were pushing him to endorse Trump for the sake of his own political future.

Cruz has indicated intentions to run for president again in 2020, and he has a team forming behind him to execute that plan. 2020 was the unspoken undertone beneath the drafting Wednesday night's speech.

Allies of Cruz, a number of whom have spoken privately to The Hill throughout this week, have been worried about what effect not endorsing Trump would have on the senator's future.

Cruz’s team ran the ad of Melania in Utah FIRST!

Liz Mairs (sp?) (the loose cannon who was fired by Scott Walker after one day) did this as a free agent. Cruz should have repudiated it, though, and didn't. Mairs had no interest in Cruz, she was just trying to stop Trump and make a name for herself.

The only thing Cruz was upset about was losing. It was always butt hurt.

No one made you sign the pledge. Anybody who signed the pledge and backed out should never be taken seriously for president ever again. Like Cruz would ever win anyway. He acts like a phony and a typical career politician when he speaks.

Yeah, it’s funny how it all emerged over time. I didn’t dislike the guy, just wasn’t ever impressed by him. Now, like so many others, I can’t stand him.

There’s a danger in regular folks falling hard for the politician who “checks all the right boxes.” That’s too easy.

Strength of character, leadership, real-world experience. Those are important too, and often will lead to good results. And you can’t fake it.

I voted for Cruz in the primary, but refused to get caught up in all the drama. The whole kabuki dance of pop culture politics bores me to be honest. BUT, what Cruz did last night was classless! Don’t want to endorse...fine, don’t go. But to show up, accept a prime time speech, talk for 20 minutes and then do what he did is like going to someone’s house for a party and pooping on the floor to make a point. If the place now smells it YOUR fault, not everyone else. As far as I’m concerned, his political future is over. If he thought he was positioning for 2020 all I can say is I won’t be there. Some of us have long memories. Ha, I’m Floridian who abandoned Rubio after his immigration stunt.

It’s noteworthy that shortly after the Nat. Enq. article on his dad, with the pic of him next to Oswald, came out, Cruz suspended his campaign.

He’s never sued the Enquirer for that or for the 8 mistresses story.

It is curious that Cruz the elder went to Canada and stayed there, after 11/22/1963. No one has asked why.

Yup. I know my first post is long, but I documented that whole thing with the Pac ad and how it played out. Trump was counter punching.

I thought the same thing until Boehner came out about Cruz. Say what you want about Boehner, but I never remember Boehner saying anything bad about anyone.

Last night, Cruz proved to the nation and anyone who supports/supported him that his priority is himself and feeding his ego. He thoroughly embarrassed the State of Texas. The United States of America, her safety and security, her future, come way down his list of priorities. He’s, IMO, a self-serving, ego maniac, who cares only about himself. He doesn’t deserve to lick the boots of our troops! He turned my stomach last night. How about you?

Cruz's response at the time:

"While I'm at it, I guess I should go ahead and admit, yes, my dad killed JFK, he is secretly Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa is buried in his backyard," Cruz joked to reporters in Indiana. "This man is a pathological liar. He doesn't know the difference between truth and lies. He lies practically every word that comes out of his mouth."

Ted left out one other thing at the end of his speech:

"Please clap."

The more Cruz opens his mouth, the more diminished he becomes... last night, he looked puny, spiteful and insignificant, no more than a typical politician, the very thing we’ve all come to hate... I only mean this figuratively, not literally... Ted, you and your style of politics can go to hell!

Re:P Cruz....There’s a reason why people learn to hate this pr***. He thinks he’s superior and that will NEVER change.

Rafael won't be eligible in 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, or EVER.

Neither was Rubio.
